How come I can bring home a perfectly healthy Kole Tang (supposedly one of the hardiest) and watch it starve and get covered in ich and die within 3 days, but I can bring home a Powder Brown (supposedly one of the most fragile ich magnets) that looks like it was rolling around in a salt mine for fun, and have it looking great in 3 days?

Could it be the source? Maybe collection technique, also possible that the Kole had other issues and the ich was only exposed due to the weakness. Just a couple of thoughts.

I'm sure it's something like that, all came from the same store, the same holding tank even. Just bugs me that the hardy fish is the one that doesn't make it...

I've always heard that even though Kole's are supposdly one of the heartiest of all, the have a very poor survival rate in the home aquaria.. Starvation being one of the main issues..

That's depressing to hear, it was one of my list of potential tangs to have eventually...

Have had a kole tang for over three years..never an issue with anything. They do like the greens...its their favorite...Not sure what is going on for you.

I had the same experience with my Kole. It did great for a week and a half. Then the ich broke out. It would never eat prepared foods and would only eat algae off the glass and rocks. My blue hippo also got ich at the same time but he has pulled through great I think because he was eating well. Sucks cause the kole was a really cool tang!

Oh stop crying ...LOL. I had a blue tang do the same (even ate flake! )withing 2 days and brought down 4 other fish with it. I am afraid to add any another fish to the 2 that I have. I am thinking Invert-only (half-kidding). it definately stinks. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the deceased.

I bought a kole when I first got into reefs, indo pacific one. It last about 2 weeks, would never eat any prepared foods. It had internal parasites and got all bloated up and died. I learned the lesson that day to make sure the fish eats before I buy it.

The next tang I got was a Scopas and I have had him for almost 3 years now.

Same thing here. Had a powder blue that slowly starved, and got a nice plump Kole that has never been sick, exactly the opposite of au01st.
