How do you dose your Mg?

It's time to start dosing Mg and I am looking for some options.

Liquid or Powder?
What company do you prefer?
Daily, weekly, or monthly dose?
How often do you test for Mg?
Is there something else I should consider/remember?

Opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Yea the last time I did it, it coincided with a 70% Zoe meltdown. I used the BRS computer. Of course this is probably just a coincidence.

Yes but in fairness and at risks of being flamed out. I did not test prior too. BRS video is where I got the info to dose at the end of a 2 part cycle. Looking back through my notes at what was going on at the time I lost a bunch of Zoe's. the only thing I did different was dose Mg. I'm certain that's what caused it. I may be wrong ???? But I don't think so

you should only have to slightly dose your top off water..with weekly water changes(if you do that) should be able to maintain proper Mg levels if you use a good salt..i have to dose my top off with the powder every now and then..ime

Huh... I never thought about that. I am dosing Kalkwasser in my ATO already. Is it possible to add the Mg also?

I can't say for sure. I think I may have read some where about this but can't recall what it said one way or the other.

Yeah I think I read the Mg is a byproduct of low end Kalkwasser. I believe with certain Kalk you don't have to dose Mg at all. I guess I'll find out with the test kit.

K..If you were low on mg you should see some precipitate but it's probably dosing such a small amounts that it may not be noticeable

I use brightwells liquid mag a little goes a long ways in my case so it last a wile .
I only have to slightly dose every few days as needed I dose it over my return pump in my sump 30 mins or an hour before adding any calcium.

I highly suggest you ready Randy Holmes Farley's write up on the subject of alk, calcium, and mag. After you read that, if you got questions I would be more than happy to answer some questions since Randy can be a bit over most of our heads from time to time.

But when I dose mag I use epsom salts since liquid is expensive and you need a lot to raise your mag.

I will look into that thanks. Will look into the epsom salts also.

Sorry I could no be more helpful but alk, cal, and mag are very big subjects and how they relate is complex. Randy did a much better job explaining then I could or have time to. There are a lot of pros and cons to each method of dosing,

On a personal note, I do not dose anything I do not have a test for. Are you even sure you need mag? Depending on your kalk source, you most likely gef some mag from there and from you water changes

No worries, I appreciate the read. It will give me something to do while I cant sleep!

I do think my Kalk should be adding some Mg (due to the impurities in Mrs. Wages) and I am doing regular water changes.

Like I said I will be buying a Mg test kit. Hopefully tomorrow or this weekend and I will know for sure.
