How do you dose your Mg?

I test weekly using a Red Sea Pro test kit. I dose via dosing pump set for 5 ml twice a day using BRS mix. I supplement one dose a week with Kent TechM just for good measure. My Mg stays around 1400 and I don't get any algae.

Hey thanks for the info! That's the exactly what I am looking for. I am curious about the additional Kent Tech?

the liquids are very expensive if you have a large tank... I bought a large bucket of Seachem's Mag powder for 30ish...

As others said - a quality salt and consistent ~10% weekly water changes should maintain MAG around 1300. I think a safe bet on MAG depletion is about 5ppm/day so it moves down very slowly so when you increase it you should also do it slowly.

I am doing my water changes I am just worried because I use Reef Crystals. I'm not sure how the Mg levels compare with the more expensive salts.

In my 90 gallon I dose 3 caps of Magnesium, Calcium, and Alkalinity. 1 cap of sustain iodine. And 2 caps of strontium. I am going to start trace elements as soon as Jack Kent sends them over. I do this every Monday and Thursday.

Looking to set up an auto doser for all of this if anyone has experience and wants to point me in the right direction.

Hey thanks for the info. Your dosing schedule seems very labor intensive.

It's not bad. Takes a couple minutes and gives me a reason to open the cabinet under neither and check on things.

RC is a quality salt. If you are mixing out a 1.026 then I believe the MAG should be aroun 1350.

Curtismaximus;938752 wrote: Yeah I think I read the Mg is a byproduct of low end Kalkwasser. I believe with certain Kalk you don't have to dose Mg at all. I guess I'll find out with the test kit.

Brightwell aquatics makes a dry product called Kalk+2 that has kalk, mg, and strontium mixed together. I sometimes add a little to my top off. Definitely get a good quality test kit before adding anything. I usually go with a dry powdered form when needed after testing.
