How do you get/keep your S.O. interested in this hobby?

I simply got her a tank out of a spur of the moment. We were in a LFS and she said she wanted some seahorses, so the next day I bought her a 6g nano cube and three ORA seahorses. Just upgraded to a 150g starfire setup. All I heard from her was what fish I was going to be getting now..

I set up a seahorse tank in the main room for my parents and I maintain it. This way they would be more interested in the hobby, while I worked at Star Aquatics and we have a conversation piece in the living room for guest. (I just make them feed the ponies, thats all they really want to do anyway lol)

This is totally my scene as well. If my wife had any idea how much I spend on this hobby...in fact...if I knew how much I spent on this hobby...I'd probably get out! So yeah. She sees it as MY little hobby that I spend too much time with. She appears to be very disconnected and could care less until company comes over. :thumbs:Then she walks everyone over and yaks aaaall about it. She feeds the fish when I'm not around too.
She's a closet refer...and that's where I want to keep her. :up:

My husband is supportive so far. He knows the cost. I'm pretty open about it. Although I only have drygoods at this point so wait and see. I seem to have some luck at flooding things and that hasn't put him off yet. He isn't thrilled about going to a LFS. I'm not sure if it is as painful for him as going to Joann fabrics but he is starting to ask questions about fish. Can't say he has ever asked questions about sewing ;-)
But he knows I tend to have expensive hobbies. This is sort of a substitute for my astronomy hobby. Since kids it is hard to find the time or energy to observe. Watching fish on the sofa where it is warm is a bit easier. No need to worry with cloudy weather either.

Honestly I have to say in the past "fish" in general always seemed boring to me until I really got to know the hobby. I used to raise all types of snakes,spiders, lizards you name it. If it was something weird that looked like it would kill you in your sleep I probably had it or wanted it. However that was when I was single. She doesn't seem to mind the fish/frogs as much but I mentioned a while back I wanted another tarantula and I thought she was going to shank me.

My wife knows the prices...sometimes that's good and sometimes thats bad. I let her take care of (feed) the freshy tanks which she enjoys and I take care of the salt tanks.
Take your other half over to Rits place and tell her to pick a couple things out that she likes...he has so much with awesome colors that it is not difficult to find something. Once it's in the tank, she'll follow the growth of that coral beyond belief. Mine actually knows the different names and can rattle them off when we go there. Pretty cool! :up:

well my husband and i got into tanks together. we started with a 40 tall, with a collection of fish from petsmart... i would be mortified if i did what i did now, then..
My 40 gallon breeder is currently being stocked by the trade of cichlids to various LFS's, and my dear husband goes along with all of it
his main job though is to troll through pages of rubbish on various sell sites to find good deals... the 40 breeder we have was actually bought from CL for $160, and i don't think i will ever find another deal like that again... not that i need it... we're down to 25 stocked tanks... and i have a delivery to make to a LFS later today... leaving me ..... 25 stocked tanks... :doh:

She actually introduced me to the hobby; we were out shopping and she wanted to stop at Star Aquatics (R.I.P) to show me the tanks. I'd never really seen nice saltwater tanks so I was amazed at the color...the rest is history.
Nowadays, she has trouble keeping up with the massive amount of $5 tyree chalice, rainbow acan, and hornet zoanthid frags rolling in :lol2: It's a really good thing that I get rare LE frags for $5 bucks eh? Shhhhhh....
I try and keep her into it, but at this point I'm so far ahead of her as far as knowledge that it is very hard to keep her up to date. I do try and explain why a chalice the size of a dime goes for $500 online but so far I've been unable.
