im gathering the pieces needed for my first reef tank. money's a little tight right now, just got married , so im getting things here and there. so far i have my display tank, 29g, and my sump, 20long. how does the rest of my equipment sound for my tank.

i'd love any suggestions

skimmer
Bubble-Magus NAC6 or
Reef Octopus NWB 150 or
ASM G1 or
SWC150 BMK or 120 cone

return
Quiet One 2200 or
Mag7 (if i can find a good deal used)

lighting
FishNeedIt 4x24watt T5

circulation
2x koralia but i map spring for a MP10 if i have any money left

Sounds like the makings of a good system. Mag 7 might be a bit overkill on the return (I run a Mag 9 on my 90), you could probably get by just fine with a 5 and may even valve it back a bit.

Is the 29 drilled/reef ready? If not, there are members and sponsor stores that can do this for you.

I am an Octo user, but I would think the SWC150 BMK or Cone would be your best bet, with the atman pump.

The return pump, from those choices it is 50/50....both good, although I prefer the Mag.

The lighting, depends on what you intend to keep and I don't know much about that fixture. I would be tempted to recommend spending some more time determining the best lighting and be willing to spend a little more than 100 bucks. Invest in the lighting for the corals you wish to keep and make sure you are putting out quality lighting parameters to assure healthy livestock. Tell us more about your intent for the tank.

Circulation - both good choices. I have used both and now use the MP10. You are good there.

im planing on keeping zoas, some softies, monti caps, and a few LPS plus maybe a BTA

as far as lighting, im not stuck on that fixture. i've been reading on nano-reef about people having real good experiences with them.

Cool. The 4 bulb fixture should be perfect for that selection. If you are getting good reviews, it is a steal at that price. I would make sure you use quality lamps and do a little reading up on the best bulbs & color combinations.

Setup sounds great and I appreciate you taking the time to research, ask questions and plan. Kudos.

Can't wait until you get up and running. You may want to consider joining the club and it will pay for itself at local sponsors and hookups from members. No biggie either way, but it is worth mentioning....plus it helps support the club!

Happy reefing!

once it comes time to start stocking, i will prolly join the club to get some discounts from stores. i pass creation every day i go to work and stop by once every other week to just look at their stock :D

+1 Unless you plan on uprading your tank and don't want to buy another skimmer later. I have 55 gal. tank and i'm using a skimmer rated for 175 gal.

i do like overkill, all my freshwater tanks have over kill filtration on them :D i just threw another filter on my 125g bringing total gph to about 1700 ;)

i've also been thinking for the lighting, getting that fixture since its so cheap and upgrading the bulbs.

livestock, i was thinking a pair of clowns, a starry blenny and maybe a flasher wrasse. id also like a pom pom crab becuase they seem very cool lol. would i run into any problems with these fish/invert

Pair of clowns (ocellaris or percula are most common), blennies, gobies, firefish, cardinals, basslets would all do great in a tank that size. There is one angel, the pygmy angelfish (Centropyge argi</em>), that would even do alright.

You could do two pairs of fish and one less aggressive loner in that size and should be alright, especially with the skimmers listed.

I'd stay away from the Wrasse for sure, but sounds like a good plan, If you overkill, do it on the skimmer.

i guess i'll be nixing the wrasse from the list. i'll keep my eye out for something else.
