How high should halides be from water

I'm helping DRnecropolis build a canopy for his 180. We are discussing how high his halides should be off the water. These are single end 250s with reef optics batwings. A quick answer would be awsome because we are framing it right now..

My 250s are about 8 inches off the water... dont know if it matters, but mine are double ended.

8" is going to be the mode answer.

You can go as low as 5" depending on the spread that you want/need. OR, plan for an upgrade!!!

It is an upgrade... just going to SE from DE and overdrive them from a DE ballast...don't really want to put mogul bulbs that close to the aqua.. Think we are going 12" or so..

We ended up with the bottom of the bulb at 10 inches from water surface.

You're about right or in that range.
