Ok, if there is one thing I hate, its paying for shippnig. Almost as much as I hate gas prices. My tank has completed its cycle and I am ready to add fish. I have heard that you shouldnt add a bunch of fish all at once. I want to have my fish death rate at zero so how many fish would I be able to add to my 40 breeder at once. I would like to get 1 blue hippo tang, 2 Ocellaris tank bred clowns, 1 purple firefish, 1 red head solon wrasse, and 2 gobies (havent decided on which ones).

I want to get them all at once and only pay one shipping but if it is unwise, I will seperate the orders by a month.

I'll go ahead and say it because someone else will that tank is way too small for a hippo tang, and theyre ich prone anyway your asking for trouble.

Skip the tang. It will be way too big for a 40b.

Of the rest, I'd add 3 at a time. Yeah, shipping sucks, but killing fish sucks even worse.

Yea....that would send your bio load through the roof...plus I hope you have an exit plan for your hippo that tank is way to small for a full grown hippo....a tiny one would be ok for a little bit. Just my 2 cents

i'm even hesitant to put one in my 6' 100 gallon tank just because of the potential length of the full grown tang

I have one I'm my 180 but I took a lot of rock out to give it plenty of swimming room

Told you somebody would say it....
Id say split the fish order and throw in some scavengers if your trying to hit a free shipping or lower shipping amt.

Edit:

Look up where ray city is he may not have any stores near by.

Hope I am not telling you something you already know but based on what you want to add at one time I assume you may not totally understand what the "Cycle" is. It isn't something that happens once and then you never have to worry about it again. You have established a colony of bennificial bacteria that will process the ammonia to nitrite and in turn the nitrite into nitrate. That is good. But.....that colony of baceria is only large enough to handle the ammonia that was present while you were cycling the tank. It isn't large enough to handle the ammonia created by a large population of fish. The way to increase it is to add one or two fish at a time. This increases the ammonia in the system but gives the bacteria colony time to grow enough to handle that added load. After a few weeks you could add another fish or two and the process continues.

But, you will hit a spot where you are maxed out on the number of fish you can safely keep. A 40 isn't going to allow a ton of fish. Also, I agree with everyone else that a tang should not go in a 40. You might get by with a Kole Tang for a while.

I agree....stay with the smaller fish...their are some beauties out there....gobies are neat small fish and the red firefish.

My 40 Breeder cycled about 3 weeks ago. 2 weeks ago I added a cleanup crew of 35 hermits , about 50 snails, serpent star and established the fuge with cheato and pods. I have 4 fish coming this Saturday, one Gregory and one blue damsel both under 1”), a six line wrasse and a royal Gramma Basslet. This is the most I would add to my tank at one time and I will be monitoring ammonia and nitrite levels just in case. I also like to use some Stability by Seachem when adding livestock just in case.

That 6-line and gramma should be the last fish added to a 40b. Can be done I have both in a 36,both are very territorial.

Those will be the only 4 fish in that tank so I am sure all will be well...or at least I will find out but thanks anyway!

Ok ok ok..... I understand a little better no about the ammonia, bacteria etc.

As for the tang, I was hoping I could get a very small tang and then pass it along when it get bigger but I will call that off all together.

I've had a cleanup crew in the tank for about 2 weeks now. I will slowly add fish to the tank then. I don't want to kill anything.
