In my opinion, more than you will need. I set up a 125 (6' x 2') not long ago. I used new dry sand that I rinsed well. After rinsing, it filled a 5 gallon bucket 3/4 full. I was nervous it wouldn't be enough but in actuality, I could have got by with less. Place your rock first then put the sand around it.

cool thats good to know.. but im going to cut pvc pipe to sit the rock on.. is that a bad idea? i read o here someone did so..

I don't like that be because sand gets under the rocks and you can't. vacuum it. It will also make your rock unstable and you may have a rock slide one day.

I've had a six line ,eight line, lunar two yellow coris and out of all of those only one of the coris ever used the sandbed. I'm not sure which ones by name but I am pretty sure there are quite a few that sleep in the rocks as well in a mucus cocoon. I believe most of the fairy wrasses do this. jmaneypanda will know for sure

im going with sand i like te look of it.. lol and im going to be cutting the pvc into 1" sec and gluing them to the bottom of the rocks.. i ave read up on this and i dont see how it could have a rock slid at all

I did the PVC thing in my first tank, except basically I had large pvc cut into rings that were a few inches tall, and set my foundation rocks in those. It worked ok, except for the 24"+ long bristleworm/eucinid worm that set up shop in one. (It's all good, he only came out at night to scare me, and never touched my critters.)

I have had DSB type setups until this most recent tank, but decided that about an inch/1.5" was the most I'd do this time. So far I like it a lot. The DSB get kinda nasty looking after a while.

thats what im talking about doing pvc rings..

I like having a few rocks on the bottom with the sand around them. It has proven to be a very very stable foundation even as I re-arrange my rocks every few months, I have never had a shift in 1.5 years and I feel like I have alot of rock. I'd be concerned with the pipe that the sand might shift and expose the pipe, at the least, it will limit where you can direct water flow. I only have 1 or 2 inches of sand at any given point and remote DSB bucket.
