How often do you calibrate your refractometer?

I check mine every few weeks just to be safe. It takes all of about 5 seconds so that is cheap insurance in my mind.

I have had and used the Milwaukee Digital Seawater Refractometer for over three years, and you calibrate it with RODI before each use. One of the best equipment choices I have ever made.

I've seen a few refractometers that just didn't hold a calibration - I concluded they were defective.

I have had mine for around 13 years, and I'd check it periodically but it stayed spot on. If I was testing a sample and got an unexpected result, I'd check the calibration again but usually it was the other person's device that was off.

I've also seen 'premature aging' of many refractometers. Usually the little pins that hold the plastic cover on the lens will rust and break.

Rinse and wipe dry after use.

Don't close up the box, leave it open because even with towel drying, some moisture will remain and closing it up in the box just makes a nice environment for rust.

Don't store it in your aquarium cabinet which is humid. Rather, put it in a cupboard or drawer that is NOT in your tank stand.

Those little things will lengthen the lifespan of your device. I had mine on the counter in the shop, in half of the box, and 13 years later it still performs like it was new. It doesn't look new - it's well worn in appearance but with the right storage and care it should last for many years.
