How often do you do your WC?

I've almost always used regular instant ocean with good results. Swapped to seachem at one point when it was on sale but I saw no real noticable difference. I've been supplimenting my tank with some Kent suppliments for the last few weeks & have seen a huge difference in my coraline growth & the health of my corals. I use their calcium daily & the iodine suppliment once a week. I recently started using the seachem suppliment called fuel as well. So instant ocean works fine for me. Since you have a calcium reactor you probably wouldnt need extra added to your system. What are your calcium levels showing when you test or have your LFS test for ya?

I do both. I test it myself 2-3 times a week and than I get my LFS to test for me once a week. We both get the same results. My calcium is at about 440ppm 450ppm. Alk is at 160 ppm, so I think I'm good with those. My magnesium is at 1300 when I test so that holds well too. I put some magnesium media in my calcium reactor at a 8 to 2 ratio instead of 9 to 1 and it seems to be doing just fine. I haven't had to dose cal. or mag. ever since.

Sounds great :) I'm going to have to start dosing at some point! My calcium is doing fine but I need to get a good test kit for the magnesium & alk! Been procrastinating on it for awhile. Most if not all os my corals are lps & softies though. I sure hope your brain coral recovers!

My brain is half dead! The medicoral dip didn't help it. But it did help my 2 sps.

I'm sorry :( but don't give up hope yet. Maybe it will come back you never know. Glad the sps are doing better!

I have a calcium reactor running on my system so would take rise my calcium level? Or will it just balance out because I think If I read right that it had about 420ppm of calcium in the mix which shouldn't affect my levels correct?

Having that said would I still need a salt mix with those trace elements to farther benefit my reef tank or will that have no affect on my tank what so ever and I can just stick with Instant Ocean as it is cheaper

Yepp reef crystals have calcium and magnesium in the mix

I'd say if you have always used instant ocean with no problems and you are running a calcium reactor as well I wouldn't bother switching brands

Hnguyen;570350 wrote: ok this rises another question I have. Have you guys ever mixed your salt mix? As in using one brand and than switching to another? Is that safe for the reef tank or will that through everything off balance and make your tank crash? I'm using Instant Ocean right now and I haven't read too many good things about it. So I was thinking of switching to another brand.

Any suggestions or comments?

I switch salts it seems everytime I buy a new bucket. Never had issues. I do 10% weekly water changes.

I do 20% every 4 weeks. I do use kalk reactor with my ATO to replinish Cal but having 100+ gal system with like 3 fish i have no load really. I do salt water for coral not fish.

The way the poll is worded I would say NO! I do a 15-20% WC weekly, I have a lot of fish and corals and fed 2-3 times a day. The water changes get the nasties OUT and it puts the trace minerals that the corals need back IN. Holley:D
