How to get more from my drain?

I have a Marineland 60 cube that i am using the stock durso that came with it. I have a Sicce 3.0 as a return and it is dialed all the way back. Every time i turn it up even in the littlest amount i get a flushing noise and i rise and fall in the overflow area. Just wondering what people might have done to the stock durso to allow for more draining ability?

First, make sure your overflow is able to handle the volume you're wanting put through it. If you're good there, get some 1/4 tubing (typically the kind found in RODI setups) and drill out the standard Marineland tube hole to accommodate the 1/4 tube. Run the tube into the drain - I did mine almost a foot down toward the sump. Then, starting with a small drill bit, drill a hole directly above the drain pipe. Increase the hole size steadily until you have attained your flow rate and no longer get a gurgling.

Interestingly enough, I did this today on mine.

Can you elaborate on the part "drill a hole directly above the drain pipe"? My marineland tank already has the 1/4 tube at the top of the standpipe.

My drain is plumbed with 3/4" black vinyl tubing. If I am drilling out the top for the 1/4" tubing what am I drilling on the top of the pipe? Did you run the 1/4" tubing a foot down the drain pipe itself?

Mine looked like this, only the drain had been assembled, and glued, in reverse (the air tube was not directly above the drain pipe).

Make more sense now?

Ok yea perfect. My marineland came exactly how yours is now. Wondering if the OP's is the same or not. I did use a longer piece (12") of 1/4 rigid airline.

Yeah mine looks like that right now. It seems like the tube that came in the top directly over the drain is glued in and difficult to remove

Probably just in there real good.

As I was saying, in the picture above, the air line goes straight down the drain pipe. Mine is on the other side and I ran it into the drain pipe and the. Used a drill to drill a small hole where the air line pictured above is.
