How to stop evaporation and salt creep

Rbredding;527292 wrote: good point GT, but realistically speaking, unless the thermostat is in the room with the chiller, you're only talking about a degree or degree and a half (AC unit runs for another 10 minutes every couple hours)

that room will be warmer, though, for sure..

and you're right, evaporative cooling is the cheapest method (if that's your measure of efficiency), chiller is the cheapest if you're measuring by how quickly a system will cool down.
Actually evaporation is the most efficient in all measures up to nearly 100% saturation of the surrounding air. In your more arid climates such as in Arizona Swamp coolers are the choice of cooling versus refrigerate.

The increase in room temp from the chiller would be hard to estimate unless you knew the actual heat transferred vs the room size and the efficiency of both units . I would venture to say a 4000 btu chiller will not impact a 6000 square foot house as much as it would a 1500 square foot house.
A chiller vented outside the home would actually help the main unit.

I recently setup 4 one thousand gallon systems with 4800 watts of metal halides per system and I maintain a 76degree water temp with one shop(20") fan per system. the ambient air temp is around 76 degrees in the warehouse where they are housed. I have them on ranco controllers so that it doesn't pull the temp to far down! I forgot they have 2 7500 gph dolphin pumps on each system as well.

RODI is set up under the sink in the next room. My tank is in the breakfast room and with the sump and bubble blaster and gfo it is all my cabinet can handle. I'll just live with it and haul water till.................Thanks, Bubba - Shirl

You can run a small clear 1/4 line on your base boards all the way to the tank. That would work.

Other factors can play into the amount of evaporative cooling, such as relative humidity of the room the setup is in. If Bubba has a dehumidifier in the room, or a whole house dehumidifier, his evaporative rate could be higher than the same setup without.

A small leak in the system somewhere could also explain the amount, except that even small leaks tend to disclose themselves pretty quickly.

i lose a gallon and a half a day myself.....i use a 20g rubbermaid container set beside my tank with a ATO unit....the water can be a pain to fill sometimes....but like previously stated...you could always do the clear water line from the RODI to the reservoir...

I wouldn't know what to do without my Osmolator. One of the best reef equipment purchases I have made.

I'm not sure what normal evaporation rate is but I get rid of about 5 gallons a day myself. ATO all the way.

I evaporate 2- 2.5 gallons per day on my system with 500 gallon total water volume. No fans, run a chiller... mounted outside :D

It makes a big mess on the light covers, and the outer rim of the tank. My stand is exposed about 1" the entire way around and it needs refinishing.
I just lowered the water box and now the sump is higher. I could have hit it out of alingment when I did my last cleaning.
My bubble blaster is about 1" full and I drain it everyday.
The clear water line from rodi would have to cross over or under a door way no matter which way I run it. I don't think it would look too great running it up and over the door, and around the entire breakfast room.
Thanks for all of your help and concerne you have all been great.

I dont remember what size your tank is but here...

Also the fan inches away from the water in the sump has a little to do with it.
A topoff would be easy to do beside the tank

The fans were your suggestion about 6 months ago....you sent me to Home Depot. They have helped a great deal to keep the temp down...if keeping my fish from boiling, I haul the water. Thanks again, Bubba

Is your house on a slab or crawl space?

I was about to ask the same thing... it would be super easy to route the poly tube through a little hole to get it down out of the first room and up into the second (assuming it's a crawl space or basement).

Why do you live so far from us? We could fix you up some way if it didn't mean five hours one way! :)

I know. I'm just trying to help everyone giving you advice by letting them know everything about your system I can think of. I will be happy to come over and help in whatever you decide to do. You have my number.
Personally I think we can put a topoff beside the tank and keep letting the fans work their magic. That way you could run the ro tubing to it once a week, fill it up and be done

Public Service Announcement:

If you have pine floors like me, do not roll a Brute full of water across them to your tank. Ask me how I know.
