Yes ammonia needs to be 0 but so does nitrite. Both are deadly to fish.

If that is diatom it will start to bloom in earnest soon. Don't worry it will go away on its own once it finishes consuming all the silicates. That is a sign that your getting close. No need to worry about the nitrate until the nitrite comes down.

Man, you are doing a good job. I remember when you first go tits tank, and you posted several posts about plumbing, stands, sumps, and everything in between. I remember the first time I saw this tank, and was in awe then. I can just imaging how it's gonna turn out with your efforts. Be patient, Man, and hang in there. You can have the best tank, plumbing, flow, lights, etc, but, if the cycle wasn't done right, and you don't have the right bacteria, nothing will thrive in it. I learned that the hard way...

Good Job, Man, good job... Hang in there. It's worth it!!!
