you can't post anywhere on this site it's extremely annoying...

am i supposed to just post in new member section i don't understand?

you literally have to pay to use this site it's very frustrating...
Not sure that's a great way to attract new people, just my 2 cents

anyway... i'll post what i wanted to post in the lounge section here since apparently i can't post anywhere else...

does anyone decorate there tanks with wood or a particular design? just seems like everyone stacks rocks and coral and it all looks the same at least from what I've seen, anyone got any themed tanks? :] trying to get some ideas for the new tank i'm setting up. wanted to possibly build a wooden boat and break it for a crash scene. not sure.

i guess we are stuck to this section. lovely. A forum that doesn't let you post. I don't get it :smashfreakB::smashfreakB::

I believe non members can post under the reef discussion page also.

I like the idea of a ship wreck themed tank, share pics if you decide to do this.

I think most people use rock because it looks natural, and easy to work with.

I know what you mean regarding the layout of most tanks looks like just a bunch of rock stacks. I came from a planted tank where the themes were amazing with a forest look or a mountain scape and so much. Unfortunately, not really sure what kind of theme you could do with a reef tank. If you go through with you crash scene, post some pics, it would be cool to see something different

will definitely post. since it's going to be in my reef it has to be realistic, I didn't mean cheesy decorations or themes, so going to figure out my design for the boat. I figure it would be easiest to just make a complete boat and break it instead of make it look broken from the start. Also probably going to use a palm type wood and soak it for a good month in some salt water and sand it down. Not sure. I'll definitely keep you all updated.

If you do this theme, would look cool if you built a mini treasure chest to go in the tank. You could also do a little skull coral (like the meteor shower skull).

debating whether to do a simple design such as a old row boat with oars... or a full blown model wooden boat. If i went that route with the boat with sails it definitely would take some time, might even have to buy myself a wooden model to put together to make it more realistic.

saltwater tanks are basically laid out the way they are for several reason one of which is lots of rock for bacteria population for nutrient export, while I sure wood might be fine in a tank you would have to fine some saltwater drift wood that won't leach out into the tank and mess with you chemistry.

I do believe wood is okay if it's soaked for a month or longer in some salt.
however after checking the price of wooden model ships on eBay it's almost not even worth it.
the model boats are about $500 if you want them to be realistic :/

However I've seen some model boats at some antique shops, maybe i'll have to go explore.

Sails would be a pain to clean when algae starts to cover it.

If I remember right, there's type epoxy sealer that you could coat the boat out of, kinda like the way ATM make those foam coral inserts. Completely seals the item in a shell

I might be a little concerned adhesive or treated material leaching into the tank.

It's weird, a lot of reefers don't like the idea of wood in the tank but when you look at tropical inter tidal zones what do you see... miles and miles of mangrove trees. There's even a bunch of marine worms and mollusks that use the wood in part of their developmental cycle.

Anyways... these are my late night ramblings of a mad man.

I'm thinking possibly maybe making a beach on one end of the aquarium using steps, obviously would be covered in sand you wouldn't notice it, however the sand might blow everywhere, still theory crafting at the moment. Just trying to think of something different.

basically a slope. and make a beach. If you google it you might get an idea what I'm talking abut.

Hi Rob, welcome to ARC :)

Yes, there are some forums that are for paid members only but looking at this thread, it didn't belong in the lounge anyway, it's for off-topic discussion and this is most certainly on-topic.

This or Reef Discussion are both good forums for this subject, and it is interesting - in all my years I have not see such a themed tank - at least not a marine tank, and I'd be interested to see how you achieve it.

Spanish Galleon maybe?

that 900g tank you use to have would have been cool with this theme...

Yeah it would. Brian from The Fish Store bought it... I don't know if he ever set it up though.
