I bought a pistol and a Hi-fin goby together at the LFS who were paired. Tried to put them in the tank together in a spot, they seperated.

I bought another pistol and a gray watchman goby, put them in the tank, they immediately divorced.

Been four months and they've yet to hook up.

Bad luck? What gives?

Don't know how authoritative these are, but hope these help:

I think the stress of being in a new tank can cause them to have issues. If they were paired up when you bought them, I'd be surprised if they didn't pair up again. What size tank is it, and what are the other inhabitants? There could be continuing stress that's causing these guys to not pair up again.

mine paired after over 1 year and now a peppermint joined the club. They make a bigger mess once paired you're lucky

my hi fin bar goby and tiger pistol took about a month....even after the goby went to check out the overflow two different times....they paired back up within a few hrs....the goby was in the overflow for at least a few days before i knew he was in there...

They sometimes pair, sometimes they don't. Also, certain species of pistols pair better with certain species of gobi.
