Crazy thing happened today. All of the sudden my mag 12 is pushing too much water for my tank. The overflow isn't keeping up so I had to turn off the pump. It has worked fine for months until now. I checked and didn't see any blockages in the siphon pipe on the overflow. Any ideas? Has this ever happened to anyone else. Can I turn down the flow on the mag 12.

You can put a 'T' in the return line, and divert part of the flow right back into your sump/refugium. Using some sort of valve on the diverted stream will give you infinite control from full flow to no flow.

If it's been running for months with no problems, there's got to be some reason it's doing this now. My first guess is that there is a blockage, maybe something you haven't seen?

You can put a ball valve on the outlet of the pump to throttle it back... but you shouldn't need to. If your overflow had enough capacity before, it does now. The physics of it didn't change. You have a blockage or something else wrong.

Now, as to whether a Mag 12 is too much flow through a sump, that's a whole different debate. Unless you have a large tank, IMO you should be running the flow through your sump slower than that (assuming you have a skimmer in it).

I concur with this. There has to be a cause for it to suddenly stop working as it has been.

Is it a hang-on overflow or a reef ready tank? Hang-ons can encounter issues but so can overflows if snails get in the drains etc.

I doubt your mag has all of a sudden upped its power. It is probably pushing the same water as before, but something has your drain blocked, or your overflow, as a few ppl have stated.

oh... check your drain line into your sump. If it is under the water too far it could be causing this issue.

just a thought.
