Ick HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

please read this:

There are only two proven methods for the treatment of Marine "Ich", copper and hypo-salinity. Neither method can be used in the presence of elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) or invertebrates and so treatment must be performed in a quarantine or hospital tank. Hyposalinity is the preferred treatment as it is not dangerous to the fish and actually eases osmotic stress on the fish. Hyposalinity can also be performed in the presence of calcareous substrates

here's a great article from Steven Pro (3 pages long) that lists a variety of treatments and plus' and minus', too. It even includes a section on Metro. It also has a section on Ruby Reef's Kick Ich (5-Nitroimidazoles).

From my understanding, there are a lot of fish you do not want to treat with copper as it would potentially cause more harm than good.

Anyways, I've used garlic in the past with great success. UV for me works perfectly and I have the water going through at 120 gph or so.

120 gph? Thats no typo? And I had mine at a trickle. Maybe I should speed it up a bit then and see if it is more effective.

hey Jin, I thought water was supposed to go through slower to be more effective? What size UV is it? must be huge!

There's gotta be an optimal speed for parasite killing. If its too slow then you're simply not processing enough of the water... if its too fast you're not killing the bugs that are pumped through...

Mine is only a 36 watt UV but I found it to still be effective at that flow rate. I think with an even stronger one you could go faster which is a good thing.

What I did to determine my optimal flow through rate was to attach a piece of clear vinyl hosing to the output and input of my UV.

I then shined a bright light onto both hoses and started running the water through with a valve at a slow rate.

Eventually after only a few days or so you will see algae being to grow on the input side of the UV and none on the output. This tells you its working and killing the algae and other things entering the UV. Then I slowly increase the flow rate every week until I finally see some algae growth in the output side of the UV. At that point I dial it back and then let it run in darkness. Keep in mind that the bulb will lose its efficiency over time so you want to compensate for that and dial it back a lil more every month or a nice chunk from the getgo.

Not too much to say, I have added the garlic to the food and checked the Nitrates with a cheap test kit from Walmart. They read off the charts!! More than 200. I am going to work on a water change. I have never done one before, so it will be a new experiment. The brown tangs spots look better, but still there. There are still lots of them however. Thanks for the info.

you'll probably want to do at least weekly water changes, maybe more with current situation, as your water quality will also impact the surval rates of your livestock. Good healthy food & good healthy water will improve chances of survival & improve imunity.

I picked up some Omega One with Garlic for my ich troubled tang. It seemed to work. Anyone else have experience with Omega One flake?
