idea to get rid of filter socks

Sure the flow through one may not be what it is through a filter sock but why would it have to be?. The max flow is determined by the Micron rating and surface area. Has anyone tried a 50 micron filter sock?
It is seriously a trickle system. I sell as many sweat teas as I do steaks and it is a slow process. If someone had a breeding setup or that sort of thing then I think this may be plausable. It would be ideal backed by a big loe tub of macro

i change mine DAILY (well maybe every 2 days) and it's by far the easiest part of my tank maintenance... get at least 2-3 of them and this is what you do.

take your dirty ones and throw them straight in the laundry machine with about a cup of bleach using hot water, i set mine on low or small load and light wash.

...15 minutes and they are clean as a whistle, and that bleach rinses out and what little doesn't evaps super fast (minutes) if you use hot water.

i love filter socks.

and no i don't have GHA growing on my chinos. ;)

My mesh socks are 100 microns. A 50 micron mesh sock would probably clo up in one day, IMO. I rinse mine out every 2-3 days.

I used paint strainers in my Eheim cannister filters to hold the sintered glass filter media Eheim uses. Much eaasier to take it out for cleaning in a bag. They work well. You could use them in a reef tank, you'd just have to figure out how to hold them in place. To me, it is just easier to pay $6.50 each for 4 mesh socks that have lasted over 1 1/2 years so far and show no signs of wear and tear, in spite of being blasted inside out with a garden hose every 3 days.

They don't require washing in a machine and all the water/electricity that would use. Once every few months I soak them in a 20:1 water:bleach solution to get rid of any slime that may collect on them.

I think mesh socks are the easiest, and actually the most eco-friendly way to go. JMO.

Good point about filter socks being eco friendly.
