Can someone clarify this for me? I notice that a good bit of individuals have Calcium Reactors. I understand how it works but if you are getting Coraline growth what purpose does it serve?

A calcium reactor works by supplying a constant amount of calcium to the tank. And yes where the output from my reactor to tank has a large amount of coraline growing.

Their are other ways to supplememt calcium like 2-part doseing or using kalk. All work but in my opinion once a CA reactor is setup you don't have to adjust it. And their is no need to worry about forgetting to dose one day.

Also you don't need a CA reactor to get coraline. Just need high calcium and all levels.

If you don't have a high demand species specific tank (SPS, Clams) for Calcium and Alkalinity. 2 part solutions would be the best to maintain such. Even with high demand, you can still get by with 2 parts solutions. The only time you go to a calcium reactor is when it gets too expensive to dosage with 2 part (Cal & Alk).

I am still dosing with 2 parts solution however I am using Aquamedic Dosing Pumps. To me, it is more accurate. Maybe one day, I will reuse a Calcium reactor.

It depends on what you are growing and the sps/lps you want to have. I understand the cost/benefit ratio of two part versus a reactor is at about 120 gallon tank that has a lot of lps/sps in it.

High initial cost and ease of use (once dialed in) is the minus and plus of a reactor. Love mine on my 90 gallon. I had a hard time keeping up with dosing every day. Its messy, takes time and is hard to be consistent. CR makes it much easier and is less costly for the very long term. Dosing pumps for two part work but they cost dollars and you have to get two and pay the two part costs.

Not to thread jack but i figured it was same topic, i am one who still doesnt have much coraline regardless of having other live rocks that do, anyone ever use purple up? or does adding scrapings really work?

was it all bubbly lol all ya needed then was some soft drink syrup and you would have a coke with a high amount of salt lol

Yep, A reactor is not needed. Just do your research and decide whats best for you. Along with the benefits there are also risks involved with running them

You may be getting good coraline growth because you have low needs in the corals department. As you add more stuff and corals get bigger, they need more and more calcium. I would look at coraline growth more as a sign that you have good Ca levels and good Mg levels, now just keep them there and with proper lighting, you should have good growth from hard corals.

The benefit of the reactor is the ease of maintenance, set it, check once in a while, and you're good. With dosing, you'll need to adjust your dosing schedule/amounts as you add coral and as stuff grows.
