Been thinking about this alot lately, specifically after I filled my 180 up.

Does regular home owners insurance cover tank floods or do you need to purchase "flood" insurance?

Not an insurance agent (and I don't play one on TV) but I'd suspect that if you tried to claim a tank accident on "flood" insurance, they'd say that isn't a flood and not covered. On the other hand, if you said you had a flood from an aquarium, your regular policy would probably back off saying that "floods" aren't covered.

If it ever happened to me, I'd claim under my homeowner's policy due to a plumbing failure on my aquarium (once I verified that aquariums were allowed). In a nutshell, I'd avoid the word FLOOD like the plague.

All I can think of with this statement is those old Holiday Inn commercials "But I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night" :shout:

But that makes sense thank you, I may have to become an expert on this topic and find a cute little isurance lady to give me some answers haha.

He's not a cute little lady, but i know the man to ask. Pm me if you want his information.

Make sure your homeowners or renters insurance has a water escape rider. They usually aren't very expensive, and then you're covered in the event of a water escape.

Ironically I just checked on this for my own house. Mine is just standard insurance and in the event the tank "fails" and damages furniture, walls and floor, that is covered. The tank itself and the livestock are not. Also, if the electrical system would take a lightning hit then it is all covered under "act of god" or whatever the technical term is.

Everything above is great info.

Flood is defined quickly as rising water from the ground up and requires a stand-a-lone Flood policy. Flood is not covered on any Homeowners Insurance policy that I have ever seen/written.
I do not know of any Standard Insurance carrier that covers aquariums or any livestock loss from an aquarium, (if you find one let us know, I might switch). If you have any further questions feel free to PM and I will be more that happy to answer anything I can.

"covers aquariums or any livestock loss from an aquarium", reading back through this I want to clarify a little more, the furniture itself (tank, stand, etc..) could be covered under Coverage C: Personal Property, but the loss would have to be from a covered peril.
I have yet to hear a Standard company say they will cover an aquarium due to the tank blowing out or glass breaking.
