interceptor

Just noticed that Interceptor sold in Canada also has praziquantel in it, 228 mg per large breed tablet. American Interceptor only has mibemycin oxime (kills redbugs). Praziquantel could kill coco and feather duster worms, and I guess bristle worms as well.

sideeffects, hermits and bluelegs, any crab, died. 2nd treatment only. I presume despite a water change inbetween and GAC, there was some still in the water, 2nd dose boosted the levels, overwhelmed the crabs. a single dose may have been sufficient IMO. I did not see any after the first treatment, but read there was an egg stage, so the 2nd stage is to kill new hatches that were protected from the first... who knows. I didnt have many crabs.

another sideeffect, I had a nasty algea outbreak a week after treatment. not sure what it was, the dead crabs maybe(I didnt have many, all in the fuge, none in the display, so algea wasnt because they werent around to eat it)? dead pods? I still see pods, but its hard to compare before to after.

in any case, maybe not fatal, but Id say bothersome, causing slowed growth and dull color is very likely. given the ease of the interceptor treatment... unless you have a lot of crabs, its a no brainer to treat.

Didnt you just have some big problems with the tank? Dead fish, or something? My memory isnt that strong. IMO, and MY OPINION ONLY, you are making some termendous leaps of faith to say that red bugs were causing your problems. It very well may have been, but unless you can say that the water parameters, controls, lighting, etc was EXACTLY the same, it just as likely was not.

I have a question.. Maybe Mrs.Mojo can field this one for me.. A lot of heartworm meds contain Ivermectin.. Interceptor contains Melicyben(sp) Oxime.. I understand they are used for different treatments and that certain breeds(collies, shelties, etc) have a negative response to said ingredient.. What's the chance of Ivermectin working the same as Interceptor and has anyone tried it that anyone knows of? Ivermectin is readliy available at most feed stores is the reason I ask..

Dr N - I am not aware of anyone using ivermectin for red bugs and honestly I have no idea of safety - I would not do it. It is easier to get via feed stores but you have to be VERY careful using it because it is MUCH more concentrated than what you would get from your vet to prevent heartworms.

Agreed.. I was just wondering.. We use it with our dogs after weighing them and working out the ratio.. A lot more PITA but a lot cheaper if your willing to go the extra distance and double and triple check to make sure you don't overdose it.. Thanks anyways!!

Try it Doc. Take a video of your face, just in case, & let us know what happens. Look, if you don't like it, you don't have to do it again :)

I was plotting on it really.. Setup a little HT and find someone with RB's and try it at a lower dose and see if there is any headway being made.. Going to do some more research on the chemical compounds and things like that to see if it would even be possible to achieve said goal.. Talked with a vet last week about it and he seems to think it would work.. Need to work out the ratio of Ivermectin to see what kinda doseage would possibly simulate the closest to the Interceptor.. That is of course if the conclusion is made to have a similar effect..

That should be easy to do since the info for interceptor is readily available. I would try the same dosage as int to being with and see what happens.

A lot of things will kill redbugs. Key is will the chemical keep them dead and will it kill anything else (coral, etc)?

If you find that it works, lie & say it doesn't. Then repackage the med in a a secret formula dip/med (Dr. N's reef dip) & sell it for a fortune. Brilliant!

LoL.. That was another concern.. How long should I stay the course and is it going to be a good idea to expose fish and other critters to it and gauge their reaction.. And would it bond and later leech back out into the water in toxic levels and run the risk of crashing a system.. I'm going to break it all down and make some notes tomorrow and do some reading and check out some stuff and after all that try some control experiments in just saltwater and make sure I don't get some odd reaction.. Then if all goes well I'll buy some infested coral and give it a shot.. Now since you had the idea for Necropolis Coral Clean Up! I'll have to cut you in.. Maybe we can get Mr.Get beat up by a hooker Shamwow guy to market it for us.. LOL

I say we hire a washed up celebrity, preferably Scott Beo (sp?)

How about Courtney Love and have her saying "it worked on mine."
Maybe Amy Winehouse if we want to appeal to a youger hipper crowd

Eh, I dont know how easy it will be. Comparing dosages of mibemycin to ivermectin is like saying "I take 800 mg of ibuprofin for my headache, therefore, I'll 800 mg of viagra". They are two different drugs, and dosages can vary completely. Your gonna have to have some sacrifical lambs, if you wanna test it.
How did you come up with this ?

I was looking into medications used to kill crustaceans. I was thinking of using several medications used to treat parasite problems in saltwater and freshwater fish. I was ready to order Dylox (a crustacide). That night I spoke to Jeremy from Coral Reef Aquarium online. When I told him what Dylox did, he told me that he knew someone who treated their pond (Koi) with the dog medication Program. Program’s active ingredient is Lufenuron. It’s a chitin synthesis inhibitor. I was very excited and tried to get this medication the next morning. I was unable to get Program so I decided to try Sentinel instead. Sentinel has the same amount of Lufenuron as Program, but it has the added ingredient Milbemycin Oxime. The initial test worked to kill the bugs. I was very excited. I stored the medication in the freezer that day. The following day I was able to get a pill of Program. I setup another test, one with the Sentinel again and one with the program. Both of those tests failed, the bugs were unaffected. The freezer was the only explanation for the Sentinel not to work. It was odd that the Program didn’t work, but this meant that the ingredient that killed the bugs the first time must have been the second ingredient in Sentinel, Milbemycin Oxime.
Milbemycin oxime is the active ingredient in Interceptor. The next day I picked up a pack of Interceptor and proceeded to fine tune the dose and perform rudimentary sensitivity testing on as many random aquarium animals as I could. Jeremy was the first person to use it in an aquarium a few weeks later. It was decided that the medication and its treatment would be public knowledge.
The wikipedia page for ivermectin [IMG]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivermectin">is here</a>. Note that ivermectin [I]is</em> the active/only ingredient, whereas Milbemycin Oxime is the active ingredient in Interceptor. I'm not a biochemist, but I'm betting that based on the post above, the ivermectin won't have the desired effect.

But... I say go for it and see what happens.

I'm sure some online and local stores will be happy to put you on the very short waiting list for some experiment specimens.

Yeah.. That's a huge difference.. Ivermectin is designed to target a specfic quality as where M.O. Treats another.. So that is going to be the main area of grey so far for me.. Its going to be a matter of how it interacts with the bio-makeup of the target as to where it will be effective or not.. Still have a lot of digging to do and a friend of mine is a chemist so I am going to be consulting her and get her thoughts on it.. Been kinda kicking the idea around for a few months and still trying to figure out how to approach it.. Like Jeremy said with the comparison of Ibu. and Viagra.. 800 isn't 800 no matter what.. Kinda like 250 watts of metal halide is waay different than 250 of PC.. Don't want to just dose the hell out of it and nuke the coral right from the get go.. That's not going to draw any conclusion at all.. Just a waste of a coral and time.. Half to work it up and get a plan together..

Bollucks! Pick a dosage & roll with it. You're going to lose specimens in this test at some point; it's inevitable, so quit messing around and get on with it! I can't make any money with so much lollygagging going on.
