Is this a bristleworm, or something more sinister?

I found this worm in my tank early this morning and it looked kinda scary so I pulled it out, took some pics, then flushed it. It was about 8 inches when it was fully stretched out. It looks like a bristleworm but is much bigger than any I've seen and it was red. Is it harmless or not?

Not harmless. Have you lost livestock?

I think I'm gonna start looking at the tank a lot more at lights out time. I thought he was most likely a harmless scavenger... but if you guys think he looks dangerous... that sucks if I have more of em

When in doubt....take it out! I'm not sure if it's an oversized bristle worm (never seen one that big) or a Euclid worm (if it is, it cold get larger and will eat fish), in either case....flush it!

I've seen bristles that large before... but it does look different. I completely agree with Jeff... I just take it out if I'm in the least bit worried. Kill first ask questions later... ok maybe that is a little much but you get the idea =)

I keep looking at pictures online to try to positively ID, but can't for certain. I wonder if I should have just tried to keep him alive in a jar to bring to the ARC meeting to get a bunch of opinions, hahaha.. or maybe start a pico tank for it LOL

I may take you up on that if I can make it back up to Johns Creek again sometime. Does the trap work well? I bought a snail trap once that didn't work too well

Take a pic of its head.

Looks like a bobbit worm to me, and they are not nice at all.

I think the close up third picture was the head, that's the end that was moving the most. He's long been flushed now

bobbit worm, man I how never to come across one of those again.
Denis, if you haven't seen one yet look it up on youtube, but back away from the screen.....hehe

I just looked up bobbit worms on YouTube.. they're pretty wicked but kind of neat. If I found one I'd probably have to keep it in a tank by itself for a while.. they remind me of that movie tremors.

well I for one hope you never fine one, cause more than likely it would be by accident and what it does to fish is the same it will do to your finger.
those guys are nasty, I do have a dark side too so i'm with you on them also being cool, i'd like to see it kill something in person.....hahaha ( mid evil laugh)
