I’ve noticed this in my tank and have assumed it’s a sponge but just want some confirmation. So is this a sponge?

Yessir, one of the more resilient types. These guys come and go at random, I like them a lot because they're not sharp like Pineapple sponges.

Not unlike Shai-hulud, is their passing not of some concern? I would think that there'd be a nutrient release or something to go with that? Or is it not usually that big a deal in a healthy/mature tank?

I'm sorry, I don't have anything real to add but did want to say I really, really appreciate the reference.

I'm a Dune fan from way back. I was ~7 when the David Lynch movie came out and my parents took me to see it. I asked for a copy of the book, they got me the "Dune Story Book for Kids"... I insisted I wanted the actual book, which I'd finished reading before my 8th birthday. I've read book 1 at least 6 or 7 times (one of a very short list of books I've re-read), and books 2 - 4 at least 3 times. As soon as I thought to use the word "passing", "bless the Maker and his passing" followed immediately thereafter, and I couldn't resist.
