Is this Ich?

Jeff, I have a bag of matrix in my sump that has been there for about 3 weeks. You are welcome too it.

Here is another idea. Move the tang to the new QT and use Prime and Stability in that one. Put the other fish in the existing QT that has a biological filtration already established. Then you can medicate with whatever you want.

Rich, that's not a bad idea at all.

Actually what I was thinking I would do is set up another QT and get some matrix and then divide half of the eheim media in my existing QT into the new QT so both would have SOME existing bio filtration. Then use Hikari Ultimate instead of Prime.

So now I'm off seeking another 20L, HOB, small Koralia and a thermometer.

Interesting, but honestly I'd rather go with something more mainstream. In the end it all ends up that you're treating for a period and leaving the tank fallow to end the cycle.

Ich has been treated successively using a lot of different meds. Using something like formalin is a good treatment, but is also very aggressive. I dont know that I'd use it on a simple case of ick, when things like Cupramine or Paraguard are so much easier to locate and use, and arent as aggressive. Also, Formalin is still available. I just bought some for use in our QT protocol.

jeff, i got plenty of room in my qt if you want to bring him up to buckhead. Its empty at the moment....let me know

Got a bunch of extra stuff to use if youd like as well.

Thanks Geoff. Actually it worked out pretty well. I picked up a 20L from Petco for $20 and the same filter I have on my existing QT. Then with some odds & ends I had in storage I'm looking pretty good.

Just need to run up to see Jenn to grab some conditioners, meds & matrix & I'm set! After I chilled out and accepted reality it's not really all that bad. Sure, I'd rather not be doing this, but I've gone through MUCH worse.

It also makes you really consider QT and cross-contamination. Case in point.. I have been EXTREMELY careful not to use anything in the DT that has been in the QT, BUT today I realized (as I did it -- duh) that I've been thawing my QT food for the tang with water from the DT. LOL So I could very well be introducing ich to the QT that never had it in the first place!

At this point though I'm not going to treat the tang, I'll just wait it out and see what happens in his QT.

The symptoms - twitching, scraping & a loose scale coming off here & there are really leaning towards ich from everything I've seen/read, but regardless it needs to be treated. Will take it methodically and see what happens.

great info for newbies...

The thing I do like about Formalin or meds that include it, is that Formalin treats a variety of illnesses that copper-based meds are ineffective against, such as Brooklynella and Amyloodinium.

While I agree that Cupramine is good for ich (I never had much success with Paraguard), if you mistakenly think it's ich and it's really Brooklynella or Amyloodinium - or if the fish has both ich and something else, the Cupramine isn't going to work.

So if one is sure of the diagnosis, yes. If there's some doubt, then Formalin will address the either/or factor.

And yes, it's harsh, it's one of the biggest 'guns' in the arsenal.
