Jawfish

I'm considering stocking a couple jawfish in my 60 cube. My main concern is the DSB needed to support them. I've been told anywhere from 3" to 6" but most seem to think 5" would work well. I've read tons of good and bad regarding DSB's though.

I'm not too worried about the height. It's a 24" tall tank so it's plenty deep enough to support a 5" sand bed. It's the rumors of sulfur bombs that worry me.

I did consider building a jawfish "shelf" along the back wall where the sand would be deeper but the space required to support 2 of them, or even one, would be too much and then there's no guarantee that they'd choose that spot to live anyway.

Just looking for opinions, and even better experiences, with DSB's and yellowheaded jawfish in particular. The plan is for two of the yellowhead jawfish and they'd be the first fish in the tank.

Thanks!

I have had several and they are awesome fish. From my experience, they will go wherever the sand and rock will support their burrow even moving sometime to experiment in other areas. I had 4" sand bed with no problems because they just stacked rock and shells around the entrance. Be sure to put the rock in and make it stable first prior to sand otherwise if they burrow under the rock, it can come down on top of them. Provide plenty of small rocks and shells for them to play with stacking. Also make sure to have a screen top, they will jump! Good luck, I'm sure you will enjoy them.

4 in bed was mine however place your rocks on the glass before the sand for stable rock work . They usually burrow under the rocks.

Yep. Familiar with burrowing from my YWG in my BC29. I make sure rocks are on solid footing. Also, I do have a screen top so that's taken care of.

No long term issues with a 4" bed? I guess some areas of my BC are that deep right now anyway.

Don't stir it up just make sure you keep lots of sand digging critters. Snails, sand sifting starfish maybe small horseshoe crab.
