Picked up a 12 gallon jbj tank and stand from a member over the weekend that I plan to make a nano reef. I also got a par38 led light to put over it, and it looks great.

I want this set up to be done right, so any input will be apprectiated.

Right now, the tank is sitting on a desk, mostly to save space, but also works out because the par38 fixture clamps on to the lip of the desk.

So far, I added about 10-12 lbs of florida crushed coral substrate and filled will RO water. Turned the pump on (maxi jet 1200). Now i'm waiting for the dust to settle down, then i'll add salt and a couple pieces of live rock to get the cycle started.

Edit: sorry the picture is sideways^^

Looking good, always enjoy the start of a new tank, that stand rocks. Have you figured how to attach the light to it? I have a 6 and 28 gal nanocube, love the look. Keep the pictures comming.

I just got a biocube 8 with the same stand. These stands are so cool

thanks, but i'm actually not using the stand right now. it's more convenient to have it on the desk where it is, plus the light is fastened to the edge of the desk where it is in perfect position over the tank

Question: Before I put any livestock in here, I know I need to cycle the tank. It is filled with RO water and salt mixed in. I can go ahead and add live rock from my other tank, but how important is it that I have a heater in it for the rock/cycling purposes? I dont have a heater to put in it at the moment

not sure, but I would assume since the house is cold, that its under 75

I would think its ok if the temp is in the low 70's, a lower temp may slow the cycling process.

cycling is in process, had live rock in for about a week. experienced the diatom bloom, and then what i'm assuming is bacteria (water went from clear to cloudy).

put a bag of carbon in the back chamber, should I do a water change or just let the water continue on its own?

moved most of the corals over into the nano, most everything opened up right away. the toadstool is not open at the moment, although it did open last night with the lights off, but its always been temperamental.

current livestock is just:

misc zoa frags, red mushroom, blue/purple mushroom, toadstool, kenya tree, teal palys, and some gsp that wasnt doing too well in the previous tank (barely opening now so we'll see)

3 nassarious snails

probably going to add the firefish goby and maybe a small clown until it outgrows it. either that or a yellow clown goby

also, took the tank off the desk and put it on the original stand, the light fixture is clamped to the window sill

Edit: sorry about the picture quality...ipad. the colors look much better in person i promise lol
