JBJ USA (Transworld Aquatics) Experience

Ok, so I was removing the hose from my chiller today and the nipple that the hose connects to broke off. My bad for not lubricating the hose. It just snapped off when I tried twisting the hose to break it loose. Sucks, but these things happen from time to time.

So, I decided that I would try and give customer support a call to get a replacement part. This was my fourth time having to deal with JBJ USA (Transworld Aquatics) customer service. This time turned out to be the worst experience that I have had with them yet. Previously they just had not been friendly on the phone, they messed up orders, or sent me a faulty product. I was not happy, but ended up getting what I needed in the end.

This time, when I called, the customer support rep was not friendly, like usual. I can understand that her job is probably not the most glorious job on the planet, but come on... Can't you at least pretend to be somewhat happy speaking with customers? I mean, really? Is that too much to ask for?

Anyways, putting that aside, I explained to her what my dilemma was. I told her how the nipple broke, and that I wanted to purchase whatever parts are necessary to fix the chiller. I did not bring up warranty claims or anything of the sort, I just wanted to buy my parts to fix my chiller.

She explained to me that I cannot purchase the parts necessary to fix the chiller and that I cannot send it in to get it fixed. She just kept on saying that if it broke, it cannot be fixed. She said that I would just have to buy another chiller and hung up.

Piss poor service...

I will never buy another JBJ product ever again!

Post it to their Facebook page and see if you get a different response.

I heard they sell those pieces for $110 which is weird. A guy on another forum was just ripping JBJ for trying to charge him that much for two fittings

She told me that I could not buy the part, so I don't know..

I am so disappointed every time I deal with them.

Sucks man. I just bought my second jbj chiller and then I started reading all this. Hopefully I don't have any issues with those.. I really want to hard plumb it as that's how my frag setup currently is with the old chiller that runs all day

Well, the chiller itself is a pretty strong unit.
I am going to see if I can rig something up with NPT and Barbed fittings.
The threaded portion is still intact, so I will see if I can make it work somehow.

I read some guy found a 1 1/4 female threaded with slip and then just plumbed from there.

Yeah I love them. Have a 1/5th on my 90 and it barely runs, temp always solid. Found a 1/4 on r2r for $350 to replace my old aqua medic that sounds like it's about to explode any second. Too cheap to pass up and I trust the seller.

I don't own one, but is this the elbow your looking for Grant?

They have a few other replacement parts for the JBJ chiller as well. Maybe worth checking out.

Brett,

Great site, but unfortunately my chiller is the Mini Artica 1/15. They are setup completely differently than the bigger units.

Tony check out the rest of their stuff. A vendor suggested I check the site for some old replacement parts I was looking for that were discontinued. They carry a ton of parts and in my case it saved my ***.

Well it was worth a try.

This was a great suggestion. Shortly after doing this, the VP of sales and marketing reached out to me (even though he is at MACNA this week). Says he wants to help, but unfortunately the the nipples are attached to the heat exchanger, so it really is not repairable. He did say that he would speak with his team about using threaded fittings where the compression fittings are.

He did respond rather quickly. That is a good sign that management has their stuff together when it comes to customer service.

You really get the JV team when you call on the phone. It's a lot harder for them to tell you to go pound sand when they've got a large audience watching the response.
