JDavid's 8 and 29g BioCube builds

These pictures are all over the past few days. Just now I have anchored the frogspawn to a small piece of rubble to keep the crab from knocking it over, and the zoas to a small rock. When I came home today the zoas were moved around, one piece was stuck pretty good to the frogspawn and it was knocked over. I suspect the larger crab did that. Some of the zoas are just missing.

Also I just did a WC about 15%. When everything opens back up, I will take some more pictures.

I may be rushing, I know, but I'm having fun and not spending too much money, and worse case scenario I can give something away, did I mention green buttons free for the taking? Lol.

I sent a bunch of pics from my phone to pc but only about ¾ of them made it. I might add more later tonight if I didnt get some of the good ones up.

So far, I only have $120 bucks in the 8 gal. $150 if you count the fish

ammonia is up.. around .5-1.0 ppm after two feedings. just a pinch of nutrafin granules. havent even added any frozen food yet as the clownfish is eating the granules.

interestingly, the zoas are all open for the first time. the ones up top hadnt even opened up yet. they are neon green/yellow

I'm wondering if I should go ahead and do yet another wc, or wait and see if the ammonia goes down overnight. really, a 1 or 2 gallon wc every few days is no big deal, but ideally I would like to see this ammonia cycle faster and do 1 a week

from my brothers friend. I'll pop a couple of the fire and ice off and put them on some ruble for ya when they start to spread more. maybe I'll have a decent zoa frag by the may frag swap and we can meet there

Make sure you dip corals before putting it in your DT.

I have seen people talking about dipping corals but I haven't been dipping anything. This will all go in the 29 when it is up and running so I guess I will dip them before I put them in there. What's the point? Just to kill hitchhikers?

I have coral dip I can give u next time u swing by. Its good to dip 100% of the corals u get. No matter where u get them from. U dont want to bring any pests into the tank. Looking good so far man. I love that clown

petco mall of GA. they will match website prices and the site was doing a sale on clownfish. they almost never have good stuff tho but that day they had black ocs too and even a good looking RBTA for $25

Cool, I cant wait.

It's a good thing you gave me that coral dip last night
I have been noticing long strings of mucus like stuff in my tank, today there is one coming off of my zoa colony and I noticed for the first time it is coming off a creature. I saw a tiny tentacle moving in and out of what appears to be a small tube in the rock where the stringy mucus stuff is coming from.

strange thing happened while I was at work. I have a pretty good sized featherduster in my tank that was in the back on the left side of the tank, he abandoned his tube and moved to a crack in between two rocks in the front of the tank. I cant tell if he made a new tube already or not. I did not know that they migrated like that.

The green zoa frag in the very top of my tank isn't doing so well. a few of them died today. They looked fine yesterday. I am about to test the water to see if I can figure out what's up. the duncans look like they could be stressed out as well, some of the tentacles do not look right. hoping a water change will alleviate whatever is causing the problem.

I will post the test results and maybe get some pics of the corals. Everything else is doing fine. the brown algae on the crushed coral bloomed again as well.

Edit: I think I might need to start supplementing the corals. I thought that frequent water changes would replace enough trace elements but maybe not. all I have right now is strontium and molybdeum.

Okay so heres what I have so far
temp- 78
SG- 1.025
ammonia- 0 ppm
nitrite- above 0 and below 0.25 ppm
nitrate- 20 ppm

it appears that nitrate is the culprit, hopefully the only one. I took glass of water from the tank right before doing a 15ish%
WC and tested from that. hopefully the WC alleviated the high nitrate enough. I will have to test again in a little while, at which time I will get PH also. gotta take care of some stuff then come back the tank. I will try to upload some pictures tonight to see if anyone can spot any other problems.

The duncan is already looking back to normal, if not better than it usually does
hopefully I will not lose anything else.

well all the corals are looking good. decided to start setting up the 29, dont have the stand yet but it is next to the 8 on an old coffee table and they are both dead ahead in the view from my recliner :)

soon I will be able to move stuff over and finally aquascape the 8.. rather than jam pack it and try to keep everything separated. Picked up a bucket of reef crystals today so I should be good for a while.. but maybe not with the next build thread coming ;)

got a powerhead in the 29 its about 9/10 of the way full. just need a few more gallons of RO water
pics and stuff later

Edit: oh also picked up an acan the other day. over 10 eyes/heads/whatever. seems to have lost its color but is still fat and happy? could just be the lights.
