Just starting out. Already broke :)

LOL thought your travelling :P

Welcome to the money pit my new tank still is not running yet !

I've found that I can always spend more money on my tanks. Even when I get something "new" I can always upgrade. I say "new" but mean new to me. I try and get everything second hand and still end up spending too much.

There are some hobbyists that have managed to do this less expensively with amazing results (there's a John in Dallas...beautiful tank!). I don't rememebr his avatar.

I am finding with a total water volume of 540 gallons the expense is going up fast. Maybe I should not have hooked all my tanks together lol.

Val, We'll get you fixed up. I got that rock I made, and get you some good cured Live Rock to seed your tank. Maybe we can avoid the cycle and jumpstart your tank. Also got some corals, GSP, A large Kenya Tree, and Button Polyps to add some color for ya. I'll even get you to the meeting as I'm off that day. BTW, I'm bringing a rock covered with GSP to the meeting.

I meant to type jump start and skip the cycle.. By the way, dont know if it helps but It has been running for several weeks with live sand and a few hermits in it

You can shorten the cycle time with fully cured rock, That said even using full cured rock you will get a little die off so you want to test everday till your reading 0 for ammonia and 0 for Nitrite and i would suggest under 10 for nitrates. That way your sure its fully cycled. You hermit crabs are probably helping you along already so should not be that long.

My bad, you may have to cycle the base rock. It has been out of water for a while. The liverock is straight from the tank, well cured and will get your system going quickly since it's already populated with bacteria. We'll get together on this.

Thanks Jim for helping me out today. Jim is a great guy everyone :)
Also, I just installed 2 new powerheads :D and am trying to install a skimmer and sump..(different thread)

Val, How did the rock I gave you work out? You'll have to post some pics of your tank for us. It was cool listening to you talk about having seahorses in a tank in Miami. I might try that in my 30 gal hex tank when I set that up, sometime in the not too distant future.

Haha Ron, trying to do it right.. Too much money to do it wrong and mess up. Jim, the rock worked out well. I used some of it as a base to the live rock I already had. I'm sure it will liven up in a few months. The Kenya tree and polyps are doing awesome. Also went and picked up some nice frags from Tom in Atlanta.. I got them all mounted last night and so far everyone looks they are doing good. I'll post pictures after everyone relaxes and gets settled in. Thanks everyone for your help.

As far as the seahorses, they are great! The only problem with having them around here is you will either have to breed your own brine shrimp, or go buy a bunch about once a week, which is quite a little trip every week for food.

Mine were wild caught so had to have live food, but a lot of the captive bred ones will eat mysis, so you could try that. They like a little bit warmer temp, and you cant have a strong pump/filter. I used a bubble rock and hob skimmer. They aren't strong or fast enough to stay away from the filter.
They need something branchy and colorful to hold on to, even if it isn't live.

If you decide to get some and need help let me know.
