Kalk wasser

Does anyone use it anymore.i have reading about using limewater for the same thing.
Please help with your knowledge and input

+1 i use it in my ato. I have been wondering whats the pros cons on using in a ato vs a stirrer? Hope someone chimes in on it

wouldn't be the same??? you just have the ro/di water pump into a stirrer

you can see a ph difference of fresh kalk and... settled(?) kalk with an apex or rk. ive been debating on getting a stirrer. but is it worth $200?

I do the po' boy method

5 gallon bucket with spigot attached about 2 inches from the bottom (Beer Bottling one). Mrs Wages Limes goes in with RO a small pump that is on a timer that turns on sometime in the middle of the night. I fill up the ATO container from that

Edit: Hey grouper, I read your thread... pretty neat. When the Fish room gets built I would like to try something like that. Does the evaporation rate change much or do have to reset the drip rate often?

the stirrer allows you to have a supersaturated solution at all times and uses much less kalk.kalk in the ato uses a lot more kalk and a lot of it precipitates out.that being said,i use it in my ato but would like to get a stirrer eventually.

With kalk, you water to drip supersaturated water, not the paste. That's why Nilsens are ideal. They can mix a bulk water supply and keep it supersaturated. Whereas manually, you can only make a finite (usually 1 day) supply at a time.

I pre-dissolve Mrs. Wages in vinegar (~1 part lime to 10 parts white vinegar).

1 level teaspoon of lime (plus 10 teaspoons vinegar) is mixed, and then gets added to a quart of top off water.

The mixture of kalk and vinegar forms calcium acetate, which also adds organic carbon for carbon dosing (the acetate).

It's a balanced two part plus carbon. This same thing is sold by Salifert for ~$15 a liter!

Yes, exactly how it should be dosed. The only "drawback" is having to prepare the mixture daily and/or frequently.

I use Kalk through an ato and kalk stirrer.

Have been for years.

It helps keep my PH stable and provides more than adequate CA for my 120... It is also suppose to help with locking down phosphates.

I mix up a batch of the lime/vinegar, then keep it in my 'fish 'fridge' (which my wife bought for me after seeing my black worms

what is the purpose of "carbon dosing"

Adding organic carbon encourages growth of bacteria which consume nitrate and phosphate. Those bacteria are then 'exported' in your protein skimmer (along with those nutrients).
