We really want 1 big fish (tang) in our tank and wanted to get an opinion on this one. Most sites say they are peaceful and they are one of the smaller tangs. If the tang got too big we maybe could sell it to someone or to our LFS.. we just really want one. :)

We have 2 Chromis, 1 Clownfish & a Diamond Watchman Goby.

I have a 3.5" Purple in my 57 Gallon rimless. I have aspirations to upsize eventually, but also know that if he ever got too big before I could upsize I could find a loving home for him. You are going to get a mixed bag of response to this question...but a Kole should be fine for a while from what I understand...if you start smaller. I would think anything below 4-5 inches for a Kole...55 Gallon would be fine.

Here come the tang police! :) I had one long ago, and yes they tend to stay a little smaller than others. However, it's not only a matter of the size of the fish, but the distance they like to swim across.

Lots of other "big" fish you could look at, depending on your tank's maturity. I'd also consider adding another clown in there. They like to be paired up and one will eventually get much bigger when "it" becomes a she.

We were thinking about getting one 2.5"-3"

We just love the tangs.. lol. Our tank is 2 mo old. We had 2 Clowns just last week... but unfortunately one died from starvation because it would not it, it died after a week of having it. Our 1 Clown seems to be doing fine..eating good & swimming happily around.

Edit: would not eat*

I got mine from Warehouse Aquarium by PDK...it was incredibly healthy. No issues with the fish and he has beautiful markings. May want to give them a call and see if they have any...

A small one but it would outgrow that tank...from what I understand they will grow to a similar size as a purple....I need to upsize within a year to keep mine...otherwise I would be bad bad tang owner ;-p

Another factor - make sure tere is plenty of live rock. They graze on the rock all day.

I think one should be just fine as long as there is swimming room. I would aquascape so they can swim freely back and forth if they so desire.

I had one in my 58 and he was one of my favorite fish. He dove in and out of the rock work all day long and played.

Went through the same delema as you in my previous tank. The sinopsis of advice from people I trust is this.

1. It is OK for a while but be prepared to re-home at a later date. Drawback, when you get attached it is sometimes hard to let them go to a new home.
2. Don't do it because "I am sure I will be upsizing". You never know what the future will bring and upsizing may not be possible down the road.

I put one in my 35 but made sure he was small when I got him. I was knew that a time would come where if I didn't upsize I would re-home him.
