Or is it always a gamble? I've always loved the look of the large angelfish, and now I'm looking at actually being able to house one before the summer. Not willing to take a sizeable risk with corals, but I'd love to have one if any are safe.

Ansleius Cratonius!!

That species is quite possibly the ugliest fish know to man. In fact, it's known to the state of California to be a carcinogen!

Large angels are a risk; if fed well enough, they can be an acceptable risk. I'm planning on housing a couple in my reef.

No.. That's a Robbinus Acanlickus..

The AC is the most elegant fish out there.. They are $2,000,000,000,000 as there is only one in the world..
Almost as nice as a Rajajuis Knightus but not quite..

Nip and eat are 2 very different things! Keep him fed and happy and you should be okay.

If you want a truly reef-safe angel, you're going to have to stick with the genicanthus angels.

If you want a large angle that is truly reef safe your best bet is genicanthus. I have a small wantanabee angle and she has tons of personallity and has never nipped at a thing. She's a very nice fish.

I totally agree here. I have a regal angel that nips at a lot of the corals but really doesn't eat any. He did start eating a candy cane coral but I just removed the coral since I prefer the fish over the coral. Like Raj said a key factor is the proper feeding rate and type helps to reduce the chance of the fish eating the corals. I saw a huge Emperor Angel in the sps tank at the Waikiki aquarium perfectly happy according to one of the associates there. Truly reef safe ? I have seen Blue regal tangs eat corals .

If I had huge colonies I wouldn't be worried about it in the first place.

Understood, but it would seem that that is the very definition of "with caution", rather than "reef safe".

lol same here!! I had a bicolor angel in my 55 reef that never nipped on any corals i kept him fed every other day with mysis so i guess he never got hungry for coral.
