Large clam dies

My soccer sized clam that was 5 years old just looked strange last night and this morning it was all sunken into it's open shell. I removed the clam. What can I do to preserve the shell and keep it in the tank. I also have another smaller clam directly beside the large one and it is fine. Sorry about the names but the large one I bought from a friend and never cared about what it was called.

just leave it outside and let it rot, or boil it.

I have a 16" squami shell in my tank from one that died when I worked at a store years ago.
