If thats the case, it's crazy overkill IMO. $9000 for half the tank lit with led's. Ouch. It would take 10 years to break even at the current price for regular consumers. Lol.

We have members with that meny raidons on there tanks but all in all oz they won't keep pace with those 1000w bulbs you run by eny means. And I'm shure if you were to swap them your not gona like it by eny means. Growth is slower

The Arco I posted came from keen reef I found in between sum rocks wen I swapped tanks earlier this year my gobi was using it as a roof to his cave it was totally browned out with only one green polop that was only giting a spec of light to keep it alive

This is for the people not happy with there LEDs quit smurffing your tanks blue light from LEDs stunt growth in most sps so if your running your blue at 100% and white at 50% your gona have issue with growth and color
There is no issues with LEDs and corals just in th the hobbyist is using them

These are some current pics of my 300 gallon. Simple PAS Digital. I have had Radions over this tank for about the last 5 months, and AIs over the tank the prior 7 months to that (best guess). Colors are a bit hard to catch under LEDs, but you get the size idea at least.

Pic. 1. This is a Tubb's Montipora Stellata purchased from Copps (John Coppolino) about 7 months ago. Grown completely under LEDs. Was 1.25" in diameter, now about 6. Still on the frag rack.

Pic. 2. This is a Starburst Monti Cap I bought about 6 months ago. Originally about 34" x 1/2", now about 2.5" x 1.75". Grown completely under LEDs. The only Monti Cap I would own. Hope this one doesn't become a pest. Color is an intense pink with yellow polyps.

Pic 3. Side shot of 300. Starting to shape up after my system crash 18 or so months ago. So glad to be rid of the blue Clove Polyp infestation. 95% of these corals are completely grown under LEDs since coming to my tank. My large Monti colonies of Sunset, Forest Fire, and Setosa were the only survivors of the crash.

When I had my AIs, I found that montis grew quite well, especially the encrusting ones. My acros, on the other had, had very little growth. Let me see if I can dig up some pics.

My moti grew faster with MH... It appears that is the case for most corals. However I have do nt have as many watts of the last lights.

My echinatas grow quickly, I don't have comparison pics, but they growth rate is higher than a lot of acros.

I Want</em> to switch back to halides, but really enjoy the reduced heat of LEDS. That is the only thing holding me back. I don't like hot rooms and I don't like temp swings in tanks. The slow growth is still healthy growth, so I refuse to abandon LEDs.

T5s are a LOT cooler than halides and can produce equal results. I just hope 112w of t5 plus 150w of led can do what I want...

I know I'm new to the reef scene but imho the mh side has more crisper color of light then the led side. Also the corals on the mh side had better colors also. But like I said I'm new to reefing and that's just my opinion.

Guys this sounds disappointing with all the hype around LEDs for heat reduction and lower energy costs. Looks like the guys who moved to LEDs are not all that happy with coral growth and color. is their anyone who jumps up and says ..I love my color and growth..
If so, let's see your pictures.

Pretty new to all this myself but here is my take based on limited experience. I can't compare MH because I have never run MH. In my last tank I had 6 - 54W T5 lamps. Growth was (by my estimation) pretty amazing. I have now run LED for a couple of months. Some stuff is growing better, other stuff is a bit slower. As for color, I would never give up my LEDs. The colors are so much more enjoyable to the eye. To me, it isn't about what LE Coral I can grow, frag and sell. It is about having a display tank that is pleasing to the eye. That is what brought me into this hobby and that is what I am looking for. So, LEDs are a perfect fit for me. I get growth (maybe slower, maybe faster), I get great color, I don't have to worry about how old my lamps are and I don't have to worry about my tank heating up.

That is a good answer on the enjoyment of the colors. It's not always about faster growth. I was just for more enthusiasm for the new technology for growth and color.

I agree Joe. I love the color from the leds as Rich has said but I want lots of it as well.

Decent growth, but where did the color go?

All you new led owners.... Give it a year or two. You'll probably be ready to find new lighting by then.

I won't be looking for new lighting, I saved the old 250w MH and picked up a chiller at a good price ; ) I listened to what a lot of people were saying here and elsewhere.

In the mean time, while I'm testing the LEDs, I'll use the the chiller to cool a couple of homebrew fermenters </em>a few degrees cooler

I love the color of my LEDs. Right now I would not trade back for any light. I have great growth.

Don't know if it will change anything or not but do your LEDs have UV?

i was thinking about making the switch just because of temp reasons but i think i will stick with my mh radium 20k great color and great growth for me. if i see some more success stories then i will make the plunge.

rdnelson99;772131 wrote: Don't know if it will change anything or not but do your LEDs have UV?

No they do not. The hobby grade uv chips don't put much uv out. A true uv chip will run 150-200 per.

That's why I'm going to add the t5s

I have amazing growth with my bio cube.

My 120 not so much. I'm about to look for a pair of 250 MHs and try them for a month
