Mine looks similar to this...

if you can find one.. get an empty frame from a 48" t5 fixture and use that :)

Here is how I did mine. Not as sophisticated as some but only cost me the wood at home depot and some paint. Less than $20

Im not very handy at all. I like the idea of using an old 48" t5 housing. Anyone got one?

I have mine sitting directly on top of my glass tops, why all this ruckus about diying? yes yes, i can hear it coming already. "glass tops? GLASS TOPS?!?!?! how dare you run glass tops with their uv reducing properties and anti fish jumping sanity". Easy, effective, coral grows just fine.

CAPTAIN COPPER AWAY!!!!!!!

I was thinking about getting some plexi glass but i dont want to fry my corals.

I've got a 48" x 24" canopy for sale in the forum. You buy it and I will modify the inside to hold an AI rail. I have multiple tanks and have mounted multiple AI's inside canopies. All you will have to do is buy, slip the rail in and tighten 2 screws - done. If you can't find someone to get the rail. I can point you to someone. Or pay me for the rail and I'll put it all completely together.

unless you have pumps producing too much heat, or a house that stays at 80 degrees, that shouldnt be an issue. One of the large benefits to led setups is that the heat production is insignificant when compared to halides or t5's. Ive yet to see a setup that runs hot with led's AND glass tops if the ambient temp is reasonable (mid 70's or lower).

Im talking about the intesnity of the leds rather than a t5. Ive heard plenty of stories about leds killing corals.

perhaps, but placement would be the key there. That and of course, not running them full intensity. If they were so bright that they are killing coral, just turn down the intensity a bit. I guess what im getting at is that i wouldnt choose not to place them on the glass top for that reason, because any decent led will be dimmable.

I think i might keep the t5's for now. Im happy with it, and my coral has been growing nicely with them. But LED tanks are amazing to look at.
