LFS going extinct?

JennM;1065441 wrote: Wow, you're rude.

There's no such thing as a 'Milliapora" as you put it.

Are you referring to Acropora millepora? Or perhaps Millepora</em> alcicornis, which is also known as Fire Coral - which is illegal to collect?

You know nothing about me, nor of my business.

Jenn

and youre awfully snarky.
want someone rude, look in the mirror. i know enough by your attitude. because i have a personal preference for what i put in the tank, you seem to complain my wants should align with what you provide.

you are essentially supplying what i dont demand.

as far as spelling a milli is concerned, i think we know what i am talking about. (a fuzzy stick)

youre awfully defensive about your (former) business practices

Ooooohhh a fuzzy stick!

Thanks for clearing that up.

Not being defensive at all. You have no idea what you're talking about, which was my point.

Carry on - clearly you know everything.

...dear lord
back to r2r for me.
happy new year all

Russ, go, leave, you had good threads and sometimes you've started good discussion but the point here is being respectful of what others think and let others share their opinions, and for what you showing here is completely opposite for what you were in the past. You might find better response on another sites but I doubt with that attitude.

Have to say that Jenn has always, always been a great person to look when in need of an experienced opinion, and all of her responses are just not two sentences, instead, an answer that would help you more in advance on what you needs are, and people like her and people who share his experiences, in this case, her being one of the most experienced, again, is what the club needs, not perfect egos nor rude comments.

eh no wonder this place is dying.
jenn is drama. her opinion stated after my statement is purely that. perhaps she is bitter that her business died. with her attitude i can see why.

i gave my opinion based off what i look for. if you value incorrect experience. by all means. coddle it.
you guys will stay the same alienating club that prevents newer members from ascimilating unless you agree with their experience or advice.

but hey... what do i know?
continue on.

while i agree with keeping the peace in a thread. you are doing a disservice by defending those you wish to defend with ideas that counter it.

this isnt keeping the peace. its just a circle club.

boot all dissenters so you can all agree together. then you will have nothing to talk about.

It can definitely be a huge challenge to keep everyone happy and have as much of a variety in stock as possible at all times.

I will have to agree on the fact that every time we do get a really nice "Milli" shipment in they just sit there... or people beat me up on prices and try to get me to price match some online website... well of course it's going to be more than online... you get to pick the one YOU want in person. You get to take it home right away... and if anything happens to it most LFS will replace it or help you out with getting a new one. Then when I don't have them in stock... everyone is asking for them.

While stores will always be forced to carry what sells and what keeps the business going... keep in mind that pretty much any LFS that I know will gladly order in anything you want... and most will order multiples in for their own stock at the same time so you get to cherry pick the one(s) you want!

Gee, Jakub, don't be so, "defensive"!

:lol2: What do we know, anyway, eh?

Nothing wrong with disagreement and providing an alternate opinion if it is done with a little respect and tact. But when it is done in a manner which is intended to caste someone in a less than favorable light, or filled with innuendo and malice we have a problem. We have discussed this in the past have we not?

think what you will, but blaming customers on your lack of business is telling

customer is always right in every business. i would not as a business owner think i know whats best for the customer more than they

The customer is NOT always right in every business. In the business i am in now, some of my customers want me to break the law, just for them, because thats what they want. I cant break the law. I would get fined and possibile jail time. Sorry, but im the professional not the customer.

This is a hobby for some people, its a career for others. If you walk into a lfs and they dont have what you are looking for, ask them if they can get it. Working at a lfs is tough sometimes. I know i worked at some for 5 years.

You are such a negative person and it seems that you are "always right".

There was a reason i stopped posting on this forum in 2008. Its people like this.

Please don't let this keep you away. Over the past year, this has become the exception not the norm. We encourage good debate as long as it is respectful but have worked hard to make sure that things stay pleasant on the forum. The surest way to accomplish that goal is for positive people to post. :-)

For the record...

Jenn's store didn't fail. She chose to close on her terms and on her time line.

She had built enough business and success to be able to say it was time to move on (retail in this hobby can be very thankless, especially with some of the people in this hobby).

Closing a store does not equal failure. In her case, it meant "job well done, let's see what's next."

Couldn't have said it better myself. Her shop was always my go too. Cash just precluded me going too very often. LOL

That's true. There were signs that helped us decide to move on. My preferred livestock supplier retired that July, my best dry goods rep was seriously ill (she passed away in May of 2015), and our building was sold in August, and the new owners wanted us to commit to a long-term lease, and when we weighed the pros and cons of re-upping for another 5 years and decided we had other goals, so we packed it in in Sept. 2013. The new landlords weren't willing to even discuss anything else (and a 33 page lease, versus the 13 page one I had with the old landlord). I wasn't comfy with the terms, they didn't want to negotiate anything, and I just did not have it in me to try to move the place - I've seen that be the kiss of death for several stores over the years.

Since then I've kept my toes in the water, so to speak, with some consulting, Brian still does some maintenance, the service tech who worked for me for 9 1/2 years still has all the customers she serviced (and more), and I work in water filtration sales (RO and RO/DI specifically), Monday-Friday and we have a LIFE now, which includes weekends off. In hindsight it was the right move at the right time, and life is good. The shop was fun for 11 1/2 years, and we have no regrets. I don't consider that a failure, whatsoever.

Nobody got screwed, I can still show my face around vendors and peers. Not everyone can say that. Some just flat out disappear in the night. I have no shame whatsoever about how I ran my business, nor how I closed it. If somebody chooses to believe something different, that's their prerogative, and clearly they don't know the first thing about me, or who I am, or how I do things, and it doesn't matter one iota to me.

Jenn

I miss your shop, but am thrilled by yours and Brian's happiness. To build and maintain a successful business for so long and choose on your own terms to change directions with as much or more success is inspirational. Haters gonna hate and ignorance is bliss.
