Light question

Are you saying that I shouldn't go with metal halides?
It's along story but it involves my leds getting stolen while I was on vacation but all in running right now at 2 18 in 50/50 t8s
So I need to get this figured out

On a 4' tank?

Oh no, just responding to Chibils response regarding halides have people having trouble with coral growth. I think it's more than just lights. There are several tanks out there with all sorts of lighting combinations that are successful. I just prefer LEDs because I don't have to change bulbs annually and don't have the amount of heat from Halides.

You could do just t5s. Then be able to tweak colors more

You just choose a bulb, screw it in, and plug up the ballast. Boom, now you have coral growing lights. You might need fans, but with 175W bulbs it should be fine.

I agree. I ran halides for 5 years then switched to led's. I stayed with led's for 6 months and corals never looked as good or grew as fast. RBTA shrank.

I switched back to my halides and in 3 weeks everything back to normal including growth.

I'm sure With the led's I didn't have something right and lost patience tweaking.

I run 2 400 watt radiums on a 4' 30" deep tank

.......I will add that I am running a chiller. It's possible to run without chiller with fans blowing on surface of tank and sump but that takes massive amount of water out to evaporation

Ok so..how about this...would it be ok to, instead of putting two; one at each end. Can I just put one 400watt right in the middle? Would I get enough spread? Would it be to powerful in one spot?

Do t5s compare to led or mh?
I found a reasonably priced led online called the current USA orbit led. Ever heard of it..I found it for like 120
Which would be around what it'll cost to get two mh going

I used to run 2 250w halides with 2 t5 blue plus combo and I had great growth and color in all my corals. A great combo IMO for a 4 foot tank. Ive never had any high end leds or t5 fixtures like ati, geisman, or radions. Im sure they grow great which is why so many use them but they are very expensive. I don't think you will get great growth from a orbit led. It will suffice, but if you want explosive growth but on a budget, halide/diy t5 is the way to go. I had mine in a canopy with 2 120mm computer fans on each end and plenty of holes in top of canopy for airflow and never had an issue with too much heat.

I found this series by BRS to be extraordinarily</em> helpful:

But the short answer is "yes" :)
