Lighting thoughts

Jeff, I think the higher end LEDs have come far enough to go with them. They have a high initial cost but I think the pros outweigh the cons by a lot and over time will have a lower overall cost of ownership. On a 48"x24"x24" tank the official recommendation would probably be to get 4 AquaIllumination modules but you could proabably do it with two of them mounted parallel to the tank or three of them mounted perpendicular.

Each module runs at about 75Ws so power consumption is minimal, and there shouldn't be any heat issues. The modules have three colors that are independantly controlled so you can get just about any color you want and you can control the intensity. Although no one has run them for this long they say the LEDs should last 7-13 years.

I picked Sanjay Joshi up at the airport for our meeting and was able to talk to him while navigating Friday rush hour traffic from the airport to downtown. I asked him if he was starting out new what lighting would he get and without hesitation he said the time for LEDs is here. He said he is already running MHs and would not go through the expense to swap them out but if he could just do it over he would go with LEDs.

Thanks Bud!

I will check out the AquaIllumination units to see what would work. My biggest concern on LEDs is coloring. If I can somehow make sure I can 'fine tune' the blues with the whites, I'd go for full LEDs all the way. I just haven't seen that ability yet and don't want to end up with a color combination that I can't tweak or be happy with.

I also need something that I can run off my Apex controller but I don't think that will be a huge problem. =)

Edit: $2300... yowza!!!

I do like that they are adjustable for intensity and will work with my Apex though...

However, that pricetag may surpass my wife's patience at this moment =) hmmmm...

I haven't seen it in a while, but there was a fixture out a couple years ago that was a fully customizable LED fixture that let you program everything from color temp to seasonal lighting cycles to simulating cloudy days. It could actually replicate sunrise and sunset, as well, through dimming of the LEDs. I think it was taken off the market because of name copyright issues, and the fact that it was well over $2k. It was everything an LED fixture should be, but way too expensive for my tastes.

Edit: I guess that doesn't really help your situation out, though.

I've got these on order and hope to get them sometime next week. If you want to see them in action you are welcome to come by once I have them running.

That's for four of the modules, but I really think you would only need three at most and could probably do it with just two.

There is an excellent thread on RC regarding these and has a lot of detail regarding the unexpected intense lighting these things can put out. BTW, this is the module that was being used over the 40B in back of the room at the meeting last Saturday.

Edit: Brian, I saw that too when I was researching LEDs. The Aqua Illumination does all that you said and more. Mapleredta has one over his new tank and put a video in his thread of the lighting storm you can similate with these. That's not something I plan to do but it is pretty cool. Here is the link to his build: http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=53326&highlight=mapleredta">http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=53326&highlight=mapleredta</a>

The Maxpect fixture allows you to swap out different spectrum bulbs. I have one coming in that I am switching out several bulbs in. They will have a controller coming out in the 3rd quarter.

That was the Solaris, before PFO went out of business (mainly due to the copyright lawsuit).

Bud, let me know when you get these. I'd DEFINITELY be interested in coming up to see them.

2 would be affordable. 3 MAY be affordable (can you PM me what you paid? every place has a discount but you have to get to the end of the order to see what it is).

Alternatively, I've been reading a few DIY threads and am very impressed. Looking at some of the kits at http://www.rapidled.com">www.rapidled.com</a> I should be able to cover a 120 with a LOT of LED light for around $1k.

I also need to have broad optics as I can't hang the light 2' above the tank since I need to have a canopy (open lighting drives me insane).

Wow. That's pretty awesome!

Edit: That's come a long way from the fixture I saw. The one I was referring to was loaded with LEDs and didn't have any reflectors on them, hence the reason for having so many.

That's the only problem I have with LEDs. They'll easily double the cost of your entire system for a decent fixture. There's a Marine Land LED fixture I'm looking at to light my 48" tank, but that would still be another $500. For Aqua Illumination, Elos, or Ecoxotic, I'd have to spend at least $1500.
