I read about limewater boosts alkalinity and pH without adding calcium, anyone tried?

where do I buy limewater?

thanks.

Mrs Wages Pickling lime - most ppl buy it at wal mart...i used kalkwasser myself before i started dosing 2 part. I have a ton of kalk if you want some

If you're giving the kalk away, I'm not going to say no :D

im scared to dose electronically....not giving it away but if you need some lemme know...I have a large container......oh wait - i could use one of those side mount switches.....hmmm i smell trade

Kalk will add a little Calcium. If you have an auto top-off you can put the Kalk in there. As your water evaps it will be replaced with high PH and high ALK water very slowly (use aqualifter pump). I evap over a gallon a day on my 120g and let it top off with lime water (Kalk).

The pickiling lime is one way to get it. I get it from BRS because it's pharmaceutical grade material, not knocking the pickiling lime.

if you get it from BRS start out with 1 table spoon per gallon of RO, mix, let settle and turn on your top off, good to go. If you need more alk in there you can step it up to 2 table spoons per gallon of RO. I use 1 per gallon and it's perfect.

You can also mix the solution up and drip it in your tank....not a fan of that, I like the top off automation. If you go with top off, be sure to have two float switches, a primary and a backup....I use 3, primary and two backup switches.

You'll find keeping your PH up and alk stable will promote the best growth in your corals. Good luck!

the electrical float switches? thats an easy trade!
do you need rke switch ends putting on it as well?

Yes, although i think im out of switch space on my SL2....guess I shouldnt have sold the SL1 ...how much is an SW5?

Kalk is calcium hydroxide. Pickling lime is calcium hydroxide. Kalkwasser or limewater is the clear saturated water that collects above the kalk slurry. It has a pH of 13 or so and raises the alkalinity of the tank.

It is a nice counter to the effects of calcium reactor
and/or denitrator effluent, both which come out at a low pH, and it adds calcium to the water. If I remember correctly the hydroxide part combines with dissolved CO2 in solution in the tank water to form the bicarbonate ion (alkalinity), which is then consumed by corals and used up in the biological processes of the tank, which tend towards acidification.

Here is a great article on the topic by Randy Holmes Farley:

If memory serves right, the SW5 is about the same price as the SL1 or SL2

yeah, one is the failsafe for the ATO but this serial fashion you speak of is way too complicated for my small brain. I read about it once but didnt ever think I would need to do it....what do i do again?:D

Oh, and I have approx 4 pounds of BRS high purity kalkwasser for your switch and a lesson on how to wire up my ATO in serial fashion so i can free up an input...instructions must be in english, like you were teaching a toddler to tie their shoe....:lol2:

I have bought it at Kroger plenty of times. They don't know what you mean when you say limewater... plus it isn't "water" at all until you mix it... it is a powder.
Just ask them where the pickling supplies are; that's where it will be. It may be a seasonal item... I've bought it on "clearance" for $.50/can before, but they did not drop the product. They were apparently dumping excess inventory at the end of "pickling season".

Yeah, but here they've apparently stopped carrying it in plastic containers and now comes in bags...not as clean or easy to use...
