im wanting to get rid of my sand as its just a big pain in the butt for me.also limits the direction i can point my powerheads and i dont like the way it looks.imoho.what im wanting to know after i get rid of the sand[i will be keeping some to help keep the rock in its place, small boarder around rock] will my paired scooter blenny and dragonet not have enough food to stay fat and happy.i do have a sump/fug and i add cope/amp every month just to make sure there's enough food.also is there any other setbacks to taking out the sand or upsides.

also the tank that i am taking the sand out of is a 120g reef.and i was thinking of putting a couple bags of sand in the sump aswell.

personally, I have seen several member's tanks who do it without sand, so yea it can be done. I'm actually considering it for my next build. I'm not sure sand in your sump will accomplish much if youre looking for additional filtration. As long as you carry extra LR down in the sump I would think you'd be fine.

As far as getting it out of an established tank... I've done it.. and outside of just taking everything out and scooping it out.. its kinda hard to do .

right now i keep 25lbs of lr in my sump and i have taking small amounts or sand out everyother day trying not to make a sand storm or freak anyone out.thanks for the info.do you think it would mess with my amp/cop population enough to where i could not support my scooters/mandarin?

I think keeping a mandarin without a sand bed is a poor choice. My guess is that he would starve

thats what i was kinda thinking aswell.thanks for the input

Edit: anymore info from reef owner that have gone sandless would be appreciated

You could always remove the sand and replace it with a heavier crushed aragonite base that wont blow around. I have also seen a few tanks, like Sanjay, that use ca reactor media like the 2 little fish reborn media as a substrate.
