I just added a large clam to my system and noticed that she has about 10 or so aiptasia anenomes stuck on her. What would be a proper, clam safe course of action to remove them before they spread into my main system?
Jeff

I'm thinking of transferring the clam into a separate bucket. There I could scrape off the aiptasia. When I'm done I would rinse it in a separate bucket before putting it back in my display. I understand that clams need to stay submerged. What do ya'll think?

first i would put the clam into a qt tank to prevent them from spreading make sure you give it lots of light and flow. then i would start by using peppermint shrimp

bad idea you dont want to scrape aptasia because they will release spores/ babies or whatever. and unless you get every last cell while scraping it will grow back

So if I did that in a completly different bucket and then rinsed it in a third bucket its still a bad idea?

peppermint shrimp (Lysmata wurdemanni) add in odd groups(i.e. 3,5,7,9)

I would get a 10 or 20gal and put all the shrimp in there. Then after lights out move the clam over and let it stay overnight. If you have enough hungry shrimp one night should do the trick. The after you can add everything to the display.

Iv got an entire bottle of aiptasia x another member gave me and iv only ever had a few your welcome to it if it comes down to it.
It works fast you could probably put it in a bucket and zap them as they open up.
You have my number if you decide you want some

Thanks guys,
Here's what I'm starting out with. I've covered my clam with a breeder net with 3 peppermint shrimp trapped inside. We'll see what happens.

One or two may be gone but still a ways to go. I may end up moving the clam into a bucket and using Aptasia X for fear that the net filters out to much light and I know clams require bright lighting.

just be careful not to get any on the mantle. im not sure how it affects clams but its better not to risk it.

I would get the clam and shrimp in another tank asap, I heard that when the shrimp munch of the aptasia they still release spores and reproduce. Saw a buddy lose his whole system in a matter of weeks....

Might be a little late for that. But, I did remove the breeder net and attacked the remaining aptaisia with Aptaisia X. Seems to be doing the trick. We'll see.
