They are for the right kind of system. They are filter feeders so a perfectly clean (one with mechanical filtration, extremely agressive skimming or highly "polished" water) system will be hard on it. If you feed your fish and periodically feed filter feeder type food, they are pretty easy. I have tons of little yellow and pink sponges in my system that came in on some rock or something. They live in the overflows and on the rock where the fish can't get at them...
