Only in New Orleans can you have a blowout practice party to get ready for a bigger party. I have been in NOLA a few weeks before St. Patrick's Day and there was a St. Patrick's Party going on in the French Quarter in the middle of the day.

Usually the vendors will put coral in a bag or plastic container. A healthy coral in a bag can last 24 hours or more. Keep the coral in a cooler to keep temp from fluctuating. I have traveled with coral for days at a time. Using a Coleman stackable cooler as a fish tank in hotel rooms. With a hang on the back filter and a small aquarium heater. Other than not having a light the coral feels like it is at home. Of course I have even traveled with a LED light just to make them extra comfy.

^^^^^ what Spike stated above. If your gettin' some fish or live coral; most stores that sell fishing tackle sells the battery operated air pumps used for minnows. They usually take 2 D batteries. Cost is around $10.00.

Be careful of temperature swings if placing livestock into a bucket for the long journey back home. You'll need a small heater if your gonna stay overnight at hotel, air conditioned room is a killer to livestock in a bucket.

P.S. It wouldn't hurt to bring a heavy duty extension cord rated for the heater for the stay over in the hotel room.

Let's assume I was flying out on that Sunday night, would vendors hold purchases for me until I the end of the day... Put the coral bags into a box and bring it in as carry on? Is that possible?

I don't think you can bring most livestock as carry one due to the liquid restrictions.( unless they have changed). I am sure vendors would hold things without issue.

I've been to a few MACNA's in the past several years. If you are able to show what you have in the bag of water is an actual living creature, the TSA will let you through. Especially during an event the size of MACNA. After the first 100 reef geeks with corals and fish pass through security, they get the drill really fast. So, just to be safe, make sure you are number 101.

I'm just coming back to the hobby after a few years hiatus. I can say that when we hosted MACNA in 2008, we had a large, very active ARC membership. I met a lot of cool people through the club. Our Christmas parties were awesome and highly anticipated events. At monthly meetings, (usually we rotated through the different LFS that would host it), we had power buys (salt, pumps, lights, etc.) almost every to every other month. Frag swaps happened several times a year. When we didn't meet at an LFS (or sometimes before or after the meetings at the LFS) we usually met somewhere to eat and have drinks. 25-35 people would be at every meeting. I have many fond memories of good friends and good times. Hope it returns to that.
