Is there a problem running a mag pump outside the sump instead of in the water?
 
i thought the mags could do either? i guess not then...
 
I think it needs to be primed though. Hanin was trying it for a water change recently...he could comment more on that.
 
If it's coming out of a bulkhead below the water line you don't have to prime it. Any pump not coming out of a bulkhead below the water line will have to be primed. It has nothing to do with the pump, just the pump placement.

Don't put too much teflon tape on the male pipe adapters, especially if it's a used Mag Drive. The material becomes bittle and will split if there is too much teflon tape making the male pipe adapter too wide. It's not as strong as PVC.
