Making a change

After several years of using halides exclusively I have finally made the order to switch over to LEDs. I just ordered four Reefbreeder Photon units. I saw them on a tank a couple of months ago and fell in love with them.

I have always been a fan of buying the best combination of quality/price I could find and I believe that this is the route to go. I hope the SPS respond well and I will keep you all posted. Back to the game.

The display tank is right around 440 gallons. Eight feet long, thirty-six inches wide and right at 29 inches tall.

Me too. I will update everyone with photos once I get them in and set up on the tank. I am excited about it. I have said for a few years that LEDs were the future and finally found a product that was happy with without having to spend 4 or 5 thousand to cover a large tank.

Just prepare yourself for some flame war! :firedevil: Some people still think LEDs are a fad. Including our ex-prez.

Dylan? Ha. He went all fancy pants AI hydras and I snagged his sweet halide setup

I hear people reference SPS often in LED discussions. My measuring stick for performance is measured in Acro's. What do you primarily keep in SPS?

I have all kinds of acros in my tank. It is a true mixed reef but I am very acro driven.

From the pic you posted in the build thread that is a colossal understatement, I think you may have all of them ;-)
or at least all the ones I like!

I saw the frogskin acro that Rit has... did that come from you?

For the record I went with MM on my 120, then added t5's. I kept the halides ( never know if I might get possessed and do a another project). I'm thinking of adding them back, maybe even with the MM's

Edit:

Edit: Weird... double post!

May want to keep the halides for a bit.

I just ordered a photon 32 for 90 so I'm also interested. Which did you get and how many for that huge tank? lol

Excellent. I look forward to a monthly update. You will be thrilled the first two weeks you have them on the tank because the new fixtures will highlight all the great coloration you got from the halides. Then, the adjustment period begins. Expect that to take a minimum of 3-6 months. (The first few may be rough.) It could take up to 9 months. So, give it a year before passing final judgement is my advice.

The beauty of it will be that I will keep my halide stuff and my light rack is made of EZ Tube so I will be able to easily convert it back if I want to return to halides. I am committed to see how it goes over a long period of time. Although it is a pretty good investment it is still reasonable.

I am going to run 4 of the 32s perpendicular to the length of the tank.

Just a quick update...the 4 Photon 48 units shipped today and should be here on Wednesday. If I can pull it off I will take down the light rack on Thursday and set it up for the new fixtures and hang the lights. I plan on doing an update...fingers are crossed and I hope all ends well.

Just installed the 4 Reefbreeder Photon 48s. It was a little bit more of a project with the EZ Tube than I anticipated due to the failure on my part of factoring in the interface of the Reefbreeder units. With that said...I ended up having to make a new light rail and hang them from the EZ Tube. I could have hooked them into the ceiling but it would have been near impossible to drill into the ceiling with the 36 inch tank. I am very, very pleased with the purchase as I have them all programmed at a 40 percent max to acclimate the corals.

Here are some pictures of the old light rack, the new Reefbreeders, the new light rack and a couple of quick pictures of the tank and a couple of corals. I plan on starting a new thread with some coral growth shots and a monthly update on how everything is doing. Right now, I am very, very happy.

Edit: The towels were placed over the tank in case I dropped anything while taking down the old lights. The back Reefbreeder units are tilted in towards the middle of the tank just so that I do not waste any light. The lights were on about 35% power for blue and white during these pictures. Maybe a little less.

smart move.... keep it slow... what is your planned schedule for raming up the intensity??

did you customize your array??? if so can you talk a bit about what you did??
