Matrix

The sea systems media Reactors that were in the power buy are great!

If I am not mistaken, Seth uses them to run matrix.

Why not just fill up the sump with the pond type? It will eventually run through it right? Similar to GFO/Carbon/Biopellet reactors. It eventually runs across the media...

Educate me.

Forced flow through makes the water run through the media. You may get some flow if you put it in a bag and just submerge it, but water will go around something rather that through it if it can and take the path of least resistance. Passive flow has water going over or around the media if it is not made to pass through the media.

The media works better (more efficiently) with forced flow, I believe.

yet another question!

100 gallons water I'll need:
1 liter of Matrix correct?

also, what inexpensive media reactor would fit 1 liter?

Yup, you need 1 liter. The TLF 550, BRS large, smaller Sealife reactor SEA sells would probably hold a liter (think that is the name....MRC's budget reactor....got a jellyfish on it). Not too many stand alone reactors that would not hold a liter, except the TLF 150 and the regular BRS one that I can think of.

I have about five times as much as I really need on my 465, but I had to fill that bio-chamber up high enough to be higher than the sump water level. Found a 20 liter bucket for $125 shipped on Amazon, which wasn't too bad.

Or, go with a BRS dual reactor and fill both with Matrix. Can't see a down side to have more matrix than needed.

That'll work too!

I run it in my 20 long, works very well.... takes about 3-4 weeks to start "kicking in"....I built a custom 75g for my 220 and plan to load it up!!! Go for it.... probably already have, but I like to hear myself type!!!lol

+1 on using matrix. I bought a gallon of it after it being recommended by rdnelson99 on this forum. I took everything out of my 2 HOB filters of my 55g QT, and added the matrix to the HOB tanks. That along with 30% water changes every 3 days is all my QT will have.

I also had an empty HOB on my 120g DT that was only used to ensure surface skim was pushed over to the overflow for my skimmer. I added the matrix to that HOB as well, and my water was much clearer the next day.

Matrix has a very good porous surface for bacteria to grow on. I'm going to ensure I keep some going in my DT for emergency QT setups once my WT is converted to another DT.

I used the regualr matrix instead of pond matrix because I thought it the pond matrix was going to be bigger. Can't comment on that...

Check out page 4 of my thread to see how I used it.

Hope this helps...

Edit: BTW: HOB's aren't my only filtration for long term tanks. Just had some left over from my FW days, and utilized them for my QT after a thorough cleaning....

So what about detritus build up in the matrix? In a canister or HOB it would be easy enough to rinse off, but those using as a substrate or Dave, with your active chamber, how do you deal with crap building up in it?

It is supposed to not need rinsing, in my appliction the main thing being the use of filter socks before the matrix in the flow path in the sump.

But you know, there is that ultra fine mulm that settles on the bottom of your sump. There is some of that on the bottom of the sock chamber, and some on the other side of the matrix in the skimmer section. I'm sure there is some of that in the matrix, and I foresee manually removing the matrix once a year or so for a rinse. But compared to there not being any detritus in the Display (bare bottom with about 40,000 GPH peak internal water movement), a small amount of mulm in the matrix is of no concern to me, really.

Just for reference to anyone reading this that needs it, my sump is an MRC Bio-Sump. the "BIO-Chamber" is that area towards the left side with the two small plexiglass lids on it. Those two partitions have about a zillion holes in them, and the matrix goes in that chamber. Water enters the sump through the left side, is mechanically filtered through 7" 100 micron filter socks, then is forced through the matrix and into the skimmer section in the middle of the sump.

I think that is just the after effects of uranium on yur cranium!

Thinking with my sump layout I could easily build a media chamber like that. Just a day's work... hmmm...

So what y'all are saying is if I use matrix a fuge won't be needed other than to breed copepods?

Are they're any cons to using matrix?

I am working on a 75 gallon sump for my 220 and was having trouble finding space for the fuge and still have a decent amount of water in the return compartment on account of the gigantic skimmer.

I'd broaden the research on Matirx to answer those questions. I am new to the stuff so my experience is limited. I'd try RC and R2R as well to get some other opinions.

Maybe a post in SeaChem's Sponsor forum as well?
