WOW!

Didnt know they even amde a testkit for Seaborgium...

The salinity thing i was refering too was in the what did you do to your tank today and doc said he checked his salinity and it was 1.014 lmao

Exactly.. The Anthelia was looking droopy.. I checked it and was expecting something (although, not that! LoL) and found a problem and correcting it.. Yay!!

You mean you don't test your Sg levels? How can you keep ANYTHING alive? The tricky part is getting the test done in less than .3 seconds (Sg half life).

I test regularly for specific gravity, magnesium, calcium and alkalinity. I check SG about every other water change, and the other three levels every 3 weeks.

I test about once a week since Im still adding stuff and tweeking dosing and reactors.

Once things are set like on my last tank, I will go to once every month or so.

any why would you test for stuff before you do a water change?

Test salinity every 3 weeks when I change water.

If I'm fiddling with the CA reactor I will test KH. Recently started dripping kalk at night to bump up the pH so I was testing KH, CA daily.

Tested my MG for the first time in a few months and found it low, so I was testing it (and KH/CA) daily for 4 days while I bumped it back up.

Largely I don't test unless I'm doing something different or something looks off. Every few months my wife will get a bug to run the whole gamut of tests, but nothing regularly scheduled.

I find myself doing this before every WC and ask...why?

you test before a WC to see what got out of control in the past week, maybe adjust salinity on the new water or to do a before and after nitrates test... I do it too

I guess I could start doing the SG the night before so if i need to adjust my new water i could adjust it adn aerate, then test the rest after and dose accordingly

How long have these tanks been running?

For example, if my tank SG is 1.026 and I prefer 1.025, then the 25 gallons I am changing out may go in at 1.021, thus bringing down the system SG to 1.025. That's just an example, not anything calculated.

Here is the formula:

Lets say you think you have 100 gallons of system volume.
You measure SG and and it is 1.026 and you want it to be 1.025.
You could also do this in the opposite direction.
If you did a 10% WC replacing 10 gallons of water, use this.

.9(1.026) + .1x = 1.025
.9234 + .1x = 1.025
.1x = .1016
x = 1.016

you would mix 10 gallons of water to SG 1.016

If your resulting SG is not 1.025 then you do not have 100 gallons of system volume and you could use this to figure out your exact volume.

As soon as i figure it out i will let you know.

over a year, reef for 9 mo or so

I know, I violated your tank age requirements but I couldnt resist :D. (FWIW I do a full panel test weekly, i enjoy it slightly)
