For those of you who did not make the meeting last night, you missed a great opportunity to discuss breeding marine fish with one of the top breeders in the country. Tal's presentation was very informative and he presented the topic in terms anyone could understand. Hopefully it will invigorate the attendees to attempt even a small breeding project some time in the future.

As a reminder, the ARC has enjoyed a very active community of local members who have had some success in breeding marine tropicals over the past few years.

This forum, BREEDERS CORNER, has a wealth of information available from some of our seasoned members, with step by step breeding reports on species such as Bangaii Cardinals, Ocellaris, Gold-stripe Maroon, Darwin (Black and White), Onyx, Snowcassos, and Tomato Clownfish. As well as several more difficult species like Green-banded Gobies, Neon Gobies, Tailspot Blennies, Orchid Dottyback, several species of seahorses, and most recently jawfish. We even have reports of attempts with Harlequin Shrimp, Fire Shrimp and Peppermint Shrimps.

Every one I have ever asked, or who has come to me, has always shared freely of their knowledge and experience.

I encourage everyone to consider the challenge of breeding and raising marine species at home. It does not take a huge investments of money, but a lot of time and patience is definitely required as Tal pointed out!
If you do try something, I also encourage you to post your breeding attempts in this forum as well as considering the MBI site.

I included the link to the sticky with some additional information sources in case you are inclined to look in to this further!

Ha! I sure picked the right week to be back in town! Too bad the turnout was so low. It was a great meeting and great to catch up with you.

It was nice meeting you last night Bob. And I agree completely, both on the quality of the presentation as well as the disappointment in the turn out.

So I got inspired to at least document the species that I have currently or recently spawning in my system based on Tal's discussion last night. I'll post them in to this forum and on MBI as well. I borrowed the log format from Tal's site and added a few things that I thought might be interesting. Feel free to duplicate my post for your own posts as well if you would like to document a spawning event in your tank. This data may be useful to others attempting to raise marine fish in the future.
Here is the link to my first report for ease of use:

I have a couple of pajama cardinals in my 300. I am not sure exactly how to sex them.

I also have a pair of the obligatory clowns. :) Mine are onxy misbars (not flashy but I love them) and one is definitely becoming dominant over the other.

I would like to read up more on fish breeding and give it a go sometime.

Here I thought I only had one more daughter to get out of the house and then I could have at least one room for myself. Not only did the middle one move back several months ago but now the oldest one is about to get out of the Navy and decided she wants to live here while she takes advantage of the GI Bill. Oh well, I guess raising children is bit more important than raising fish. :-) But I look forward to watching your successes.

I'm glad I made the 180 mile round trip from middle Georgia to make the meeting this past Tuesday night. It was my first meeting. I joined the club Tuesday night also.

I thought I wanted to be a reef keeper but after Tuesday night; I now wannabee a Captive Breeder.

I personally did not get to speak with you this past Tuesday but I look forward to meeting you in one of the meetings in the near future.

Thank you for your work with captive breeding and may your journey forward enlighten all of us on how were can become substainable within our hobby without taking away from the beautiful reefs around the planet.

hi tim. sorry we did not get a chance to talk. Happy to share what ever insights I have and lessons learned with you. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. If you get a chance check out Witts book, it helped me a lot when I got started!

You may find some information with a "Google" search. I found a link related to breeding mandarin gobies and Dr. Matthew L. Wittenrich. I have a link saved and I will post it to this link once I find out it is o.k. to post links within our discussion posts here at ARC.
