I have a jbj 70w clamp on metal halide light on a 5.5gal tank filled with montiporas and I have the light about 10in above the tank. Is this to high or should I lower it? I did have it at about 6in above but was worried they were getting to much light.

for a 5.5g with a 70w HW. IMHO I think 10" if plenty of light. I ran dual 150w MH on my 120g which is about 24" high and my light fixture was placed 18" above the tank. Do the math in size difference with my tank and yours. I think you'll just fine at 10" if not even higher.
