Hi,

My female burgundy clown died last year and now that she is gone, my male is trying to make an attractive home by messing up my sand and harassing my elephant ear mushroom.

I figured he was around 3 years old and wasn't sure how much longer he might live. So I was thinking I might just wait for him to pass away instead of trying to get him a new mate.

But I am seeing folks selling various single clowns on the boards and I was wondering if I could get a female of another coloration and have them live together. I have no expectations of them breeding - I would just like for him to have a mate to hang with.

Thanks,

Mark

Clowns can live for decades. I would suggest adding a young clown of the same type and letting your "male" become female. I guess you mean a Maroon by "burgundy". Do not mix another type with this fish. The reds (Tomato complex and maroons) are picky

I am lmao that I called it a burgundy clown versus a maroon. Not fully functional today - took me several minutes to remember they are clown fish versus "nemo fish".

Thanks for the input on the clowns. I like my guy a lot (family picked them out), so it is nice to know he'll be around for a while and I can find him a new partner.

James, I know you breed clowns there in Athens. Do you do maroons? Or can suggest where to get a young one?

Thanks,

Mark

you talkin to me??? :)
I think Bob had a thread showing how he did it. You can check out the lightning clown project to see MAtt doing it.
I'm going to put the little guy in a basket for his protection and slowly introduce them over a few days. I'll start next week and try to document it.

James,

Thanks so much for the tour of your hatchery - it was great! Your little guy is doing well, however big brother is none-too-happy at the intruder. My maroon keeps trying to hit him hard, so the little one only gets around 5 minutes of big-tank time before going back into his private chamber. I'll keep doing this in hopes of a change of heart (or sex) on my maroon. Here is a picture of my maroon. He is pushing around 3" in size by my estimate and his stripe is yellow.

Thanks,

Mark

Good Luck! hopefully it won't take too long. You do have a similar Maroon to my juvi.
